Vanderbilt's ALS Clinic Still Reverberating with Harmony
Nashville Singers shared our music again with the patients at the Vanderbilt ALS Clinic at lunchtime on Friday, August 3rd, 2012. On the first Friday of every month, the Neurology Clinic on the third floor of The Vanderbilt Clinic is completely transformed. There's a lively atmosphere, with food and music, and, most importantly, a sympathetic care team composed of every imaginable discipline.
This transformation is made for the benefit of patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. A neurogenerative disorder of the brain and spinal cord, ALS leads to weakness and muscle wasting in the extremities and impairment of speech, swallowing and respiration. Typical life expectancy after diagnosis is three to five years.
Because there is no cure for ALS and only one FDA-approved medication, which slows disease progression slightly, treatment focuses on improving symptoms.
There is also a major emphasis on creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Volunteer musicians play in the waiting room and lunch is donated so patients don't have to trek to the cafeteria.
Nashville Singers first performed for the Vanderbilt ALS Clinic
on December 4, 2009.

Harlan Wilson, Todd Wilson, and Pierre Boulogne model our new shirts at Thursday's rehearsal. |

Harlan was sporting his new Nashville Singers shirt while biking with Todd on the Two Rivers Greenway on Saturday. Within a few minutes, another biker stopped him and said, "My name is Frank Domenico. My brother Ric sings with you guys." Small world.

Arranger Profile
Matt Swann has been singing for 15 years, beginning in his native Maryland with the Chorus of the Chesapeake in 1996. From a young age he showed a strong interest in music theory and harmony-singing, and fostered that interest in both his high school years at Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts, and his college years at the University of Miami, where he earned his Bachelor of Music Cum Laude in Music Education. His college years found him in a college quartet as well, called HEAT. They went on to win the 2003 International Collegiate gold medal in Montreal. After graduating college it was off to Texas, where Matt sang with the Texas Millionaires and the Vocal Majority choruses, winning an International Chorus gold medal with the latter. He also directed the 2010 International Youth Chorus Champion 52Eighty, and has taught classes on music theory and arranging. Matt also coaches and teaches private voice lessons to groups around the U.S. He currently resides in Denver, and sings with the Sound of the Rockies chorus, and arranges music performed by many groups. Nashville Singers performs two of his Christmas arrangements: It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year and Birthday of a King.

A Refresher from our Member Manual
We are a results-oriented organization that depends on many behind-the-scenes efforts to run smoothly and to accomplish our goals. We all have skills beyond our singing ability that can be applied to the benefit of the chorus. We expect every member to contribute in some way to the ongoing operation of the ensemble. Once you're settled in your musical role, find a way to help out off the risers.
Members are encouraged to review this and other important documents periodically in the "members only" section of our website.

This Day in Music
August 6, 1960 - Chubby Checker appeared on US TV show American Bandstand and performed 'The Twist.' The song went to No.1 on the US chart and again 18 months later in 1962. It is the only song to go to the top of the charts on two separate occasions.
