More Interview Time with Sloan Yarborough 1. What adventure most changed your life? In college I had the opportunity to visit Eastern Europe and we spent a few days in Poland. One day we visited Auschwitz Concentration Camp and that day holds such a vivid memory for me that I will never forget it. The experience opened my eyes and history jumped out of the text book and slapped me in the face. To cap off this emotional journey, our choral group sang "Free At Last" on the grounds of Auschwitz. 2. What skill should every good performer/singer possess? Adaptability. Most performances will occur in a different setting than the rehearsal space and might include additional challenges. The ability to adapt will make or break the performance. 3. What is the best advice you have ever received? If it's worth doing...it's worth doing right. 4. What is the best way to motivate other men? Encourage each success along the journey to achieve the ultimate goal. 5. What should every man experience before he dies? An expensive bottle of wine. 6. What skill would you like to master? I would like to become bilingual in Spanish.

Video of the Week | |
Sullivan Ballou letter to his wife Sarah
|
Editor's Note: We do not normally feature the spoken word in our "Video of the Week" segment, but this letter is one of my favorites, and is one of the more memorable bits of history from the American Civil War. Sullivan Ballou was killed 150 years ago at the first Battle at Bull Run.
I utilized this same audio clip (from the Ken Burns Civil War Soundtrack CD) to inspire the 90 voices of the Houston Tidelanders to deliver a truly personal performance of of Irving Berlin's "Always" in the Barbershop Harmony Society's 2002 International Chorus Contest. We performed that song, as well as a medley of songs from World War II, dressed in military uniforms. Prior to going on stage, each of us wrote a special letter to our sweetie, and placed it in the pocket of our uniform as we went into "battle" that day. We were judged to be the 9th best chorus in the world in that competition, and that performance remains a very special memory that I will never forget.
If you would like go back and re-live that experience with me, for 99 cents you can download that special live performance of "Always" from iTunes by clicking on the song title in the first sentence of the previous paragraph. |
