Harlan Wilson Celebrates Milestone Birthday
Friends, family, and neighbors of one of Nashville Singers' founding members gathered at the home of Harlan and Sandy Wilson on Saturday, August 27, to celebrate Harlan Wilson's 80th birthday, which was actually August 28.
Ric Domenico actually wrote Harlan a song, which was performed by a foursome that included, Ric, Bruce Cokeroft, Sandy Derrick, and Sloan Yarborough. When they were done, Ric presented Harlan with a framed copy of the sheet music.
Nashville Singers performed a handful of songs to the crowd in attendance.
Harlan received greetings from around the world via email, phone, and Facebook. A message came in from one of Harlan's most famous fans, which has been reprinted below...
H arlan, If there's a dirty job in barbershop, its gotta be singing baritone. Years ago, I remember listening to Watch What Happens with headphones on, and discovering that you guys had recorded the album in such a way that your part (and Gene's) could be isolated from the lead and bass. This was a revelation in listening, and helped me appreciate for the first time the vocal schizophrenia which all great baritones must embrace. But it wasn't until I heard you sing Roses and Lollipops that I realized your brain, not merely your ear and your voice, had evolved from a species far more advanced than my own. Today, I offer you my thanks, my envy, and my congratulations on your most unusual life. And my wonder at how you managed to hit a few of those notes in Tennessee Waltz. Many Happy Returns. - Mike Rowe, Dirty Jobs. A little history from 80 years ago (1931) - The Star Spangled Banner became our national anthem.
- Ford Motor stopped making the Model "A" to ready for production of the new v8 engine.
- Babe Ruth hit his 600th home run.
- Lou Gehrig played his 1000th consecutive game.
- The Empire State Building was completed.
- Al Capone went to jail.
- The first manned flight into the stratosphere was completed - by balloon.
- Donald Duck made his debut.

Doug Morrison On Assignment for the Next 60 Days
Baritone section leader, and charter member Doug Morrison, has served our country for years. First, as a member of the United States Coast Guard, and more recently as an officer for the Department of Homeland Security. We have just learned that Doug is being deployed to Arizona for a temporary assignment that will take him away from Nashville for two months. We are proud and grateful for his service to our nation, and look forward to having him onstage with us for our Season of Harmony concert on November 19.
