elvis 1953

July 18, 1953 - Truck driver Elvis Presley made his first ever recording when he paid $3.98 at the Memphis recording service singing two songs, 'My Happiness' and 'That's When Your Heartaches Begin'. The so-called vanity disc, was a gift for his mother. It would surface 37 years later as part of an RCA compilation called 'Elvis - the Great Performances'.

Board Briefs

board retreat

Six members of the Nashville Singers Board of Directors traveled to Cadiz, Kentucky this past weekend to participate in the first annual NSI board retreat event. Meetings were held on Friday night at a local hotel, and all day on Saturday at the restaurant of the Marina on Lake Barkley.

The agenda included some board development training. A progress report on our 2011 business plan was presented by Executive Director Todd Wilson, along with a proposed 2012 business plan and budget. Adjustments to the plan and budget were made and approved by the Board of Directors, along with more governing and operational policies.

When the final meeting concluded (on time) on Saturday at 5:10pm, Ed Luke  entertained the rest of the board with a tour of Lake Barkely on his ski boat. Sloan Yarborough was at the helm for most of this excursion, yet everyone made it back to the docks in one piece.

The board then moved to Ed's camper, where he was kind enough grill some burgers for dinner. Members made it back to Nashville by 10pm on Saturday night.

Kudos to Ed Luke for being a marvelous host for this retreat weekend.

A brief summary of the outcomes from this meeting will be presented to the general membership at the business meeting on July 21, by President/Board Chair Bryan Patrick.

Per NSI bylaws, board members covered 100% of the costs of this weekend out of their own pockets.
