Nashville Singers Reunites Former Friends and Quartet Singers After Almost Three Decades

Ric & Rodney
Ric Domenico & Rodney Turner (holding a photo of their Miami-based quartet from 1983)

As was revealed in a previous issue of Nashville Singers News, newest NSI member Tim Mullican works at BNA as an air traffic controller. One of Tim's colleagues at the Nashville airport is Rodney Turner. After discovering that Rodney was a singer, Tim invited him to attend our meeting on January 27. Later at the meeting, in conversations with other members present, someone mentioned, "Our lead section leader's name is Ric Domenico, but he's not here tonight." Rodney remarked, "I went to the University of Miami and sang in a gospel quartet with someone by that name." Those within ear shot of this conversation, and knowing that Ric attended U of M started grinning from ear to ear. Rodney added, "When I come back next week, I'll bring in some pictures of a very "youthful" Ric Domenico that will make you smile." Fast forward one week to February 3. Ric comes in the door and starts doing some prep work in the kitchen. Rodney walks in a minute or two later, grinning from ear to ear with the aforementioned pictures. We introduced Ric to Rodney.  Ric shook Rodney's hand and welcomed him to our meeting, but did NOT recognize him. Rodney exchanged a few pleasantries with Ric and handed him a few old quartet photos. Ric was stunned and speechless for a few seconds and then exclaimed, "I can't believe this!" then proceeded to give Rodney a big bear hug. At break, the two long-lost quartet singers did their best to fill in the gaps of the last 28 years. It was a great to witness such a special moment.

Happy Birthday Ed Luke!

Ed Luke
Ed Luke

Nashville Singers member Ed Luke is celebrating another rotation around the sun today.

He and his wife, Tracey, work for Caterpillar Financial and live in Joelton with their daughter, Katie. They have two other children, Brian a military policeman in the Army, and Anna, a student at Austin Peay State University.

Ed sings baritone with Nashville Singers and is one of the newest members of our board of directors.

He scored points with new President/Board Chair Bryan Patrick by agreeing to spend this evening at, you guessed it, a Nashville Singers Board meeting. Way to go Ed!

Keeping Singers Well

On the road, onstage, or at rehearsal, healthy habits for singers are in everyone's best interests

By Matthew Sigman

Songbirds always eat, or so the Rodgers & Hart song tells us, but do they hydrate, exercise, and get enough rest? Choral singers fine tune their daily habits, optimizing them on rehearsal and performance days, but unlike straightforward programs for traditional athletes, singer wellness regimens are more likely to be an artful blend of idiosyncrasy and science. And singers don't always have the organizational support needed to maintain the healthiest choices.

It will be no surprise that in discussions with singers, conductors, and voice experts, hydration is named as the single most important ingredient for vocal hygiene, performance stamina, and overall health. Members of the Colorado Children's Chorale are indoctrinated into hydration rituals at a young age. "Our motto is 'Water: The Choice for the Voice,' says artistic director Debbie DeSantis. Like many singers, Chung-Wai Soong, a member of the San Francisco Symphony Chorus, says continuous hydration is "the most singerly thing I do. I am never without a bottle." Says Kate Johnson, a Hawaii-based choral soloist and a competitive bicyclist, "I hydrate for a concert just as I would for a race."
