Life After T12 Express Solutions:
Using Customized Solutions to Deliver More Comprehensive Savings

For more than 50 years, T12 lighting systems have been one of the most commonly used fluorescent lighting systems in commercial, industrial, and manufacturing facilities. But by today's standards, T12 lighting is considered outdated and inefficient. However, their widespread use and relative inefficiency creates an enormous opportunity to deliver energy savings by upgrading T12s with comprehensive lighting retrofits. Even though Express Solutions' T12 basecase incentives expired on June 30, 2012, you can still meet your customers' T12 upgrade and energy savings needs with our Customized Solutions.

Why did most of the T12 Express Solutions Expire?

The expiration of Express Solutions' T12 basecase incentives is a result of two pieces of federal legislation: the Energy Policy Act (EPACT) of 2005 and the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) of 2007. These regulations increased the federal requirements for minimum luminous efficacy (lumens per watt) for all linear fluorescent lighting systems manufactured in (and imported to) the United States.

Most of the T12s currently on the market do not meet the new federal standard and will be phased off of store shelves.

What does this mean for providers of energy solutions and SCE customers who are looking to upgrade T12 systems? Even though Express Solutions' T12 basecase incentives have expired, incentives for such projects may still be pursued through Customized Solutions.

C-Stores Are a One-Stop Shop for Energy Savings

Convenience stores ("C-stores") provide a great opportunity for common, simple to install retrofits that provide an attractive payback. C-stores are everywhere; that's what makes them convenient. Many are open and operational for much of every day and often if not all 24 hours. C-stores offer a little of everything: perishable foods, cold and hot beverages, deli items, and gasoline. As a result, they use energy differently than a typical retail outlet.

They also use a relatively high amount of energy for their size, incorporating extensive interior and exterior lighting, refrigerated cases, cooking equipment and more.

A typical C-store in the U.S. consumes 228-KBtu of energy per square foot per year. To put that in perspective, a typical commercial office building consumes 59-kbtu of energy per square foot per year. In California alone, there are over 10,000 C-stores.

In summary, there are lots of C-stores, using lots of energy, around the clock. What's the benefit (particularly for contractors)? Lots of potential for energy savings.
