With the school year in full swing, one of the topics that might have surfaced at recent faculty meetings or professional development is the adoption of the Common Core Standards.  Many educators are beginning to look closely at the requirements and changes driven by the  Common Core.  This issue of The Boost is dedicated to providing you the resources you need to guide you as you consider the implications of the Common Core on your ELA curriculum and instructional practices.

Keeping Connected

Keeping Connected

The Common Core aims to prepare students for "college and career readiness."  What does that mean exactly?  This short video of Peter Reynolds' Above and Beyond is a great springboard for thinking about the kind of thinking and learning being promoted by the Common Core.

Haven't actually seen the Common Core Standards yet?  They can be accessed at Core Standards.

What's FREE FOR NOW?

Because we realize that once a month may not be enough of a mini lesson "boost," we are rolling out a new mini lesson freebie program called Free for Now. Throughout the month, we will be posting different mini lessons and mini lesson collections and keeping you updated via Facebook and our website homepage.  Be sure to check back often so that you can download the lessons that are relevant to your teaching!

Reading Workshop

One of the instructional shifts called for by the common core is the "staircase of text complexity."

The Text Project is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing the most up to date research, references, and resources to help educators deepen their understanding of the Common Core Standards.

Writing Workshop

Notions and Potions, a blog maintained by Dr. Dea Conrad-Curry, is a great resource for thinking about the Common Core and putting some of the standards into a manageable perspective.

... And Collaborating

Collaborating

Pearson is sponsoring a series of free webinars on the common core featuring well-known scholars and contributors to the common core.

New York State has put together an excellent video series outlining and explaining each of the six instructional shifts dictated by the Common Core Standards.  This series can be found at http://engageny.org/resource/common-core-video-series/?au=administrators

Go to Education Week for additional resources and articles to support your learning about the Common Core.
