Happy October!

This issue of The Boost is dedicated to children's literature and helping you help children find the books and articles that speak to them as readers and motivate them to want to read!  If you've got other favorites, please share them with me so that I can share them with our community!  Happy reading!

Keeping Connected

Keeping Connected

The Common Core standards places new emphasis on non-fiction reading making it more important now than ever to help connect children with quality, age-level appropriate non-fiction reading material.  Youngzine and Dogonews offer "news and more" to our intermediate and middle school readers.

What's FREE FOR NOW?

Because we realize that once a month may not be enough of a mini lesson "boost," we are rolling out a new mini lesson freebie program called Free for Now. Throughout the month, we will be posting different mini lessons and mini lesson collections and keeping you updated via Facebook and our website homepage.  Be sure to check back often so that you can download the lessons that are relevant to your teaching!

Sharing...

Reading Workshop

Are today's children's books wild enough?  Maurice Sendak doesn't think so.  Be sure to share this great article with students to stimulate their opinion forming abilities and nudge them to take a position and back it up with examples from multiple sources.

Jon Scieszka is committed to helping motivate boy readers.  His site www.guysread.com is filled with great recommendations and tips that help not only boy readers search for good books, but girls and teachers too!

Writing Workshop

Why write?  Sometimes students question the importance and value of writing in their lives.  When they do, bring them to the NCTE National Gallery of Writing that features podcasts of several well known authors speaking about the importance of writing in their lives.

Are you studying how-to write historical fiction or do you like students to have opportunities to hear from real authors reflecting on their craft?  Then don't miss Scholastic's live webinar event at 1:00 PM on October 26th featuring Lois Lowry, Andrea Davis Pinkney, and Kirby Larson.  These authors will discuss how their most exciting stories have roots in real events and share tips about being a successful writer of historical fiction.
