help for the helper book

Book review

Sonia and I both feel very passionately about the importance of taking care of yourself, to be able to take care of others. Some of you that have attended a Jogo training may remember the analogy of putting the oxygen mask on yourself before you put the child's on during an emergency.

Barbette Rothschild has provided an extremely useful insight into the importance of self care for social care and education workers in her 2006 book 'Help for the Helper: Self Care Strategies for Managing Burn Out and Stress'.  Babette has a wealth of experience as a Psychotherapist and Social Worker. In Help for the Helper, she shares a range of ideas and strategies to prevent fatigue, burn out and vicarious trauma. All of which, sadly we may be exposed to within our field of work.

Although the book is written primarily for Psychotherapists it is suitable for any practitioner working with children, young people and families. The book is broken down into the key areas such as exploring why we may be at risk, keeping calm and clear thinking. Barbette explores a range of issues relating to self care in the context of the impact on body and mind. This book is a must have read for any practitioner

Activity
Coping Collage
(Goodyear-Brown, P. 2010)
Method:
The child or children are given a stack of magazines and are invited to cut out any pictures that remind them of their favourite things.  The child or children are encouraged to cut out pictures or words that anticipate future fun events.  For example, if the child's birthday is coming up soon, she might cut out a picture of a birthday cake and add it to her collage.  The child or children can take them home so that they have visual reminders of pleasurable events at times of stress.

Benefits:

Greetings!

Spring is here, the sun is shining  and everything is beginning to blossom.  Spring feels a time of new growth and hope. The warmer weather brings opportunites for outside play and freedom to explore for many children and young people. At Jogo we have been very busy delivering training and designing courses for a whole range of different organisations, so we contine to feel very much a part of new growth.

We are very aware that for some the beginning of spring has brought devastation and loss with the awful earthquake and Tsunami in Japan.  Our thoughts and warm wishes are with everyone affected by the disaster.

We hope that you find this edition of the Jogo Newsletter interesting.  If you have any ideas regarding what you would find useful for us to include please feel free to contact us. we are always happy to hear from you.

Please feel free to contact us at any point if you would like further information about any of our trainings.

Why do we need to be able to identify children & young people's coping strategies?

"Once a child's current coping has been assessed, you can choose specific interventions aimed at augmenting the positive coping strategies that a child already possesses, learning and practicing new coping methods when needed and extinguishing maladaptive coping.

(Goodyear-Brown, P. 2010)

As the quote states, once we know children's and young people's coping strategies we can begin to help them in the most appropriate way for them.  This is especially the case for children and young people who have experienced trauma.  The impact for attempting an intervention without having an understanding of their coping styles may leave them feeling vulnerable and overwhelmed by their emotions.

By assessing their coping strategies, we can identify the strategies that are not proving to be useful to the child's emotional wellbeing.  We can then understand some of their behaviours and actions.  This will enable us to find ways to positively manage their challenging coping behaviours and hopefully bring about growth and change.

Due to their level of development, children and young people do not have the cognitive development and emotional understanding to analyse whether their coping strategies are useful to their wellbeing.  Therefore play and creative based assessments are developmentally appropriate for assessing a child's or young person's coping strategies.

What have we been up to?

As usual things have been very busy for Jogo. We were sad to say goodbye to the Ledbury Sure Start team and their colleagues from Herefordshire who we have enjoyed delivering a range of trainings to over the past six months. In the usual Jogo style. Creativity and laughter were a key part of our recent level two training on Play Therapy which we delivered to the team.  Thank you very much to everyone for making us so welcome.

We have also been busy delivering trainings for Northamptonshire County Council on Understanding Children's Behaviour for the Under Tens and Understanding Children's Behaviour for the Over Tens and look forward to continuing to roll this program out over the course of the year.

Our Groupwork training was warmly received by the Wellingborough Education Partnership in March and as always Nikki and Janet made us very welcome. We are also looking forward to going back to Leicester over the next few months to deliver further training to a range of early years practitioners from the county. Busy and exciting times ahead.
