Junk Food Reduces IQ in Young Children
Toddlers who eat a diet filled with junk food have a lower IQ than those who eat healthily. Children who eat more chips, biscuits and pizza before the age of three have shown to be less intelligent five years later, according to researchers at Bristol University in the UK.
The difference could be as much as five IQ points compared with children given more fruits, vegetables and home-cooked meals. It has been shown that even if their diet is improved, it may be too late as the ill-effects can last for a lifetime!
This is the first time that a direct link has been found between children's diet and their brainpower in later life. Belinda gives regular talks on healthy diet for kids and how to maximise their immune systems and brain power with food. The next talk will be on February 17th at the Red Tent Health Centre in Woollahra followed by March 9th at Darling Street Health Centre in Balmain.

Burning the Candle at Both Ends?
Do you ever feel like you are constantly rushing? Always late? Always having an endless to-do list? Super busy at work? No time out from the kids? Always tired but hard to sleep at night? Most people would answer yes to many of all of these questions! But do you take regular time out of your busy life to balance the effects of stress? Sadly, many of you will answer no. When we are stressed, our bodies are constantly releasing adrenaline, cortisol and stress hormones from the adrenal glands which keeps us going at our fast pace. Over time however, our adrenal glands get exhausted and depleted and we begin to lack energy, have difficulty sleeping and feel stressed or burnt out. Luckily, there are specific herbs and nutrients are able to be used to help restore the adrenal glands and help our bodies to cope and recover from our stressful lives. My 'Restore' tea contains licorice (the herb, not the lolly!) which is a fantastic adrenal tonic. Drink 2-3 cups per day for stress and adrenal gland support and to increase your energy levels. 'Restore' is available for purchase online today!Researchers have proven direct, positive effects on the body and adrenal glands from relaxation and meditation, even with as little as 10 minutes each day. Meditation has been shown to: - Lower blood pressure
- Increase blood flow
- Decrease heart and respiratory rates
- Other healing effects, such as benefiting irritable bowel syndrome and depression
- Greater concentration and focus on the present moment
- Stress reduction
- Improved sleep quality

 | Digestive Health

| | Is Your Digestive System Working Well?
The digestive system is responsible for two primary functions: absorbing nutrients and screening out toxins. If the gut is not working effectively, cell health is affected as not enough nutrients and too many toxins enter the blood and penetrate cells.
Treating and correcting digestive function is a primary focus in naturopathy and can produce many benefits throughout the body. Some signs that your digestion may be a problem include: - Abdominal pain
- Flatulence
- Burping after or between meals
- Bloating
- Diahorrea or Constipation
- Skin rashes
- Fatigue
- Poor immunity and more
These issues may be caused by food intolerance, allergy, bacterial imbalance, liver problems, insufficient digestive enzymes, inflammation and more. Belinda is able to help you identify the cause of the problem and heal the digestive system using herbs and nutritional supplements. Many patients find it useful to do a simple food intolerance finger prick test that is able to test 96 foods and give an intolerance rating between 0-6 for each food. Belinda regularly uses this test for adults and children over 3 years. |

| | New Herbal Tea Blends Available Online
In the last couple of months, I have added three new herbal tea blends to my popular current range. I have had fantastic feedback with all the teas and in particular, the Boost tea which increases breast milk production has been incredibly popular. "I just wanted to let you know how I was getting on with the "Boost" tea you gave me to help increase my dwindling supply of breast milk! I am happy to report that after one week of drinking 1 or 2 cups a day my breast milk is back in serious production and I am thrilled. I've tried so many other teas on the market which didn't help like yours has - so thank you. I have now got the confidence to continue breast feeding well beyond 6 months." Lisa. Boost - Fennel, Lemon Verbena, Goat's Rue, Fenugreek, WithaniaThis tea is fabulous for helping to increase breast milk production in breastfeeding mothers. Drinking 2-3 cups daily will help to optimise your milk quality and quantity. This blend is also nourishing and relaxing for the mother while supporting baby's digestion. This tea makes a great gift for new mums! Birth - Raspberry Leaf, Nettle This mild tasting tea is traditionally used in the last trimester of pregnancy to tone and prepare the uterus for labour. Taken from 32 weeks of pregnancy, this blend will assist in effective uterine contractions, and helping the uterus return to normal size after birth. Both herbs have high levels of trace nutrients and minerals. Nettle also has a longstanding reputation for enriching and promoting breast milk. Cleanse - Dandelion Root, St Mary's Thistle, Spearmint, Nettle, Calendula and Lemon Peel A detoxifying blend of herbs which assist in cleansing and supporting the liver and skin. Great for helping to re-balance the body after periods of indulgence! Perfect addition to your detox program. These teas, in addition to Soothe, Restore, Enchant and Immune are available for purchase online or at the Red Tent Health Centre in Woollahra. |

This delicious salad can be kept in the fridge for a few days and is an ideal side dish at dinner or lunch to take to work. Simply pair with some grilled chicken, fish or lamb for an easy and nutritious meal. This recipe serves 4 as a side dish.
Quinoa (pronounced 'keen-wah') is a seed which behaves like a grain and is readily available at health food stores or in the health food isle of most supermarkets. Ingredients: 1 cup quinoa (rinsed well) 1 bunch flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped 2 tbs chopped mint and coriander 8 cherry tomatoes, quartered 3 spring onions, thinly sliced 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 2 tbs lemon juice 1/2 tsp paprika 1 tsp cumin pinch of cayenne 1 tsp caster sugar Pepitas (pumpkin seeds) to sprinkle on top
Method: Place the quinoa and 600 ml of water in a small saucepan and bring to a simmer. Cook for ten minutes or until tender. Drain well and leave to cool. Add herbs, tomato and onion to quinoa and toss to combine.
