Hello,

This is the last newsletter for Winter 2010 and I am already counting down to the warmer weather. To prepare, I am getting ready for my annual September detox and hope that many of you will choose to join me. Whether you are detoxing for fertility, clearer skin, digestive disorders, weight loss, allergies or general health, I will tailor a detox program specific to your needs.

I have seen many people recently, including many brides-to-be, who are aiming to clear their complexion and enhance skin health and radiance. The most important thing is  understanding exactly what you are putting onto your skin and into your body! I have included some dietary and lifestyle tips to help you achieve this, in addition to an easy and nourishing recipe for a home made face scrub.

A Kids First Aid course is being held by the Red Tent Health Centre on October 24th 2010. This will be a day made up of two sessions which will teach you about Kids First Aid in the morning and a Natural First Aid session in the afternoon.  It is a worthwhile day for anyone with children or grandchildren - you could literally save their life! See below for more information and I hope to see you on the day.

Get ready for Spring with a detox!
by Belinda Kirkpatrick

Winter is drawing to a close - I hope! - and soon it will be Spring. I always mark the transition between the cold months and Winter and the onset on warmer weather with a gentle detox program every September. I would love for as many of you to consider joining me on my detox and re-balancing your body after any Winter sluggishness which may have occurred.

While it may still seem cold and too early to think about Spring, being prepared is the most important part of any detox program so now is the time to make your detox appointment and be ready to begin with me in September.

Detoxification programs:

A supported detox program is very gentle on the body and supports all phases of body detoxification pathways. You may have tried commercial, over-the-counter detox kits in the past and found that they left you feeling exhausted and hungry.  This is usually due to the fact that they quickly mobilise stored toxins from your system but do not actually support their elimination. I will teach you which foods to eat in abundance and enjoy, while also giving you herbal medicines to help your body detoxify safely and enhance your health.

My gentle detoxification program aims to reduce acidity in the body, give your body systems a rest, support detoxification and aide fluid and weight loss. The program will result in enhanced health, increased energy, fluid and weight loss, clear skin, bright eyes, shiny hair, stronger nails and a healthy digestive system.

A variety of detox programs are available including 2, 4 and 6 week programs. Each program is individually tailored to suit your specific needs.

All detox packages include:

  • A Detox guide which includes comprehensive information relating to exercise and diet to follow while doing your detox. The guide also contains a detox recipe book.
  • Weekly emails with hints, tips and encouragement to keep you on track and interested.
  • 3 x supportive nutritional and herbal supplements to take during your detox.

Make your detox appointment. Your body will thank you!

Eating for Beauty

Healthy woman photoEating for Healthy Skin
Would you love to clear, radiant and healthy skin? Many people spend a lot of money on 'miracle products' and procedures but truly healthy skin comes from within. Smooth, clear skin is a sign of a body supported by healthy lifestyle and diet, rich in good quality fresh food and nutrients. By making the following the dietary and lifestyle suggestions, you can improve the way your skin looks and feels.

Eating for beauty
* Eat a rainbow of colours - green, red, yellow and blue fruits and vegetables are high in vitamins and antioxidants.
* Good quality protein - needs to be eaten regularly to build new skin cells. Protein is also important for maintaining your skin's elasticity and firmness. Good sources include organic lean meat, chicken, eggs and fish.
* Fibre rich foods- such as legumes and whole grains can help to improve digestion and eliminate toxins.
* Bitter foods are friends of the liver - and important for skin health. Lemon, rocket, kale, chicory and endive are delicious and make a great salad.
* Good fats give the skin moisture - and reduce dry, patchy and irritated skin. Sources include oily fish, avocado, olive oil, nuts and seeds.
* Ensure you are getting enough water - which plumps the skin and keeps it clear. Warm water with a squeeze of lemon is a prefect way to start the day. Herbal teas also help keep skin hydrated.
* Avoid alcohol soft drinks and caffeine - which dehydrate your skin and depletes it of many nutrients including vitamin C which is needed for collagen formation.

Live a radiant lifestyle
* Daily exercise - oxygenates the skin and results in healthier, firmer and more nourished skin. Exercise also tones your muscles, reduces the appearance of cellulite and gives you a natural glow.
* Avoid cigarettes - active and passive smoking cause premature aging and nutrient depletion. Walk away from people smoking around you.
* Beauty sleep - boosts the immune system and improves your complexion. Aim for 8 hours every night.
* Use natural skin care products - Check the ingredients you are using on your skin and ensure you buy as natural as possible. Avoid sulphates, benzoates, parabens at all cost! Check out this quick video link for more information
http://safecosmetics.org/
* Cleanse your skin daily - with a plant-based cleanser that is pH balanced and does not feel dry.
* Moisturise to hydrate and smooth - this is also protective and maintains healthy, youthful looking skin.
* Exfoliate for a healthy glow - Skin brushing and body scrubs stimulate the circulation, increase elimination and encourage healthy toned skin. A facial exfoliant should be very gentle and used twice weekly to refine the complexion and remove dead skin cells.
* Smile! This makes everyone feel good!

Skin therapy
The following nutrients are of particular importance for skin health. While these foods will help keep the skin at its best, sometimes nutritional supplements are required. Belinda has many herbal medicines and nutritional supplements which can be individually prescribed at therapeutic doses to boost the skin's health and appearance or to treat specific skin conditions.

* Vitamin A - cod liver oil, carrots and alfalfa
* Vitamin C - strawberries, broccoli and citrus
* Vitamin E - oats, egg yolks, nuts and seeds
* Silica - sprouts, kelp and sunflower seeds
* Vitamin B3 - wheat bran, liver, turkey, oats and barley
* Essential fatty acids - oily fish, seeds and nuts
* Probiotics - natural yoghurt, miso, sauerkraut
* Herbal medicines - including burdock, horsetail, yellow dock, echinacea and cleavers.

Attention mums!

Mums and Bubs website

Photo of children's feetI have recently posted some advertisements on http://www.ellaslist.com.au which is a website dedicated to mums with babies and pre-school children in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney. The site is worth checking out as it contains a unique daily calendar of all the great kid friendly stuff happening as well as Mum & Bub services in the directories.

The next stage for me is getting some testimonials from my mummy and daddy clients! If you are interested in doing this, please make a quick visit to http://www.ellaslist.com.au and make a comment. You can even award a star by rolling your mouse over the stars.

Having testimonials really helps attract new families to the clinic and will help them in their journey toward better health and wellbeing.
Many thanks!

Recipe - Delicious Morning Muesli
by Belinda Kirkpatrick
Morning Muesli
Couple eating breakfast
A good breakfast should be an important part of everybody's day. This muesli is a great source of energy for the whole morning and a good source of protein and fibre. Making your own muesli is great because you can add or remove any ingredients according to your own taste.

This combination is great to support digestive function, reduce gas and bloating, lower cholesterol and help excrete excess hormones from your system.  It makes around 15 serves and is best stored in the fridge to protect the oils in the nuts and seeds. Ensure that you use sulphur dioxide-free dried fruit (preservative 220) - read the label carefully.

Ingredients:
3/4 cup triticale flakes
1 cup rolled oats
1/2 cups rolled barley
1/2 cup fine oat bran
1/4 cup pepitas (pumpkin seeds)
1/2 cup sunflower seeds
3 tablespoons chopped almonds
1/4 cup goji berries
1/2 cup sultanas
1/2 cup dried apple, chopped
1/2 cup dried apricot, chopped
1/4 cup psyllium husks
3 tablespoons ground linseeds
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Method:
Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl. Store the muesli in an airtight container (preferrably in the fridge) and serve with natural yoghurt, your choice of milk and fresh fruit (berries, kiwi and passionfruit are great).

Option:
As a treat, mix the triticale, oats, barley and cinnamon together. Add 4 tablespoons of manuka honey and 4 tablespoons of water  and combine. Spread in a thin layer over a baking tray and bake at 140 degrees for 30 minutes or until lightly toasted. Allow to cool and then mix with other ingredients, as above.
Magic Magnesium
from 'Her' magazine
Magic Magnesium
Photo of whole wheatFood processing robs many foods of magnesium and most people consume far less than optimal magnesium levels. It is easy to consume a low-magnesium diet if you eat a lot of refined foods.

Magnesium is needed for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body. It helps maintain normal muscle and nerve function, keeps the heart rhythm steady, increasing energy and stabilises blood sugar levels. When white flour is refined, it loses the magnesium-rich bran and germ. Bread made from wholemeal flour provides more magnesium than bread made from refined flour.

Magnesium combined with vitamin B6 is very effective in reducing PMS, menstrual cramps, mood changes and breast tenderness. Eating a wide of legumes, nuts, vegetables and wholegrains will help to optimise your magnesium levels.
