Become "The Savvy Caregiver"
at Oneonta Education Series
The Alzheimer's Association Northeastern New York Chapter is offering a free six- session training program to help equip family caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer's disease or other age-related dementias. The Savvy Caregiver is being offered at The Plains at Parish Homestead at 164 Heritage Circle in Oneonta from 11 am to 1 pm on Tuesdays, September 11, 18 and 25 and October 2 and 9.
"Taking care of a person with Alzheimer's disease or related dementia is hard work," said Chapter Director of Programs and Services William Hindrichs. "To do it successfully, family caregivers need special skills and knowledge and an attitude that helps them to look after themselves."
The Savvy Caregiver program helps caregivers better understand the changes being experienced by the individual with Alzheimer's or other age-related dementia, and helps caregivers to provide individualized care throughout the progression of the disease. Each two-hour session of The Savvy Caregiver is facilitated by a trained Alzheimer's Association staff member. Participants each receive a manual and DVD to refer to at home, and will leave each session with plans to help them practice new skills, put new knowledge to the test, and assess the success of each new tactic learned.
A light meal will be offered at the September 11 session. The Savvy Caregiver is a free program, but registration is required. For more information, or to register, email jmott@alz.org or call Jamie at 518-867-4999.
