New Survey Report Emphasizes Impact of Caregiving on Working Women
A new survey released this week by Working Mother Media highlights the growing number of women serving as a primary caregiver for a family member with dementia. The Alzheimer's Association® acted as a knowledge partner on the survey, "Women and Alzheimer's disease: The Caregiver's Crisis," which reveals the increasing demands on women to balance career, parenthood and caregiving. The survey reveals telling statistics:
More than half of caregivers had to adjust their work schedules to accommodate caregiving and 39% passed up a promotion.
55% of caregivers are not saving for retirement.
65% of caregivers have not had a vacation in the past year.
A quarter of former caregivers report that their pay either shrank or was limited by the demands of caregiving.

Along with our Walk to End Alzheimer's our annual Evening to End Alzheimer's is one of our signature fundraising events. Proceeds from the evening provide critical support for research and education programs, care consultations, support groups and safety services right here in the 17 counties of Northeastern New York served by our chapter.
This year's event will take place on Saturday, June 23 at Hilton Garden Inn Troy. "Memories in the Making" will be a whimsical celebration of the role art plays in our memories. Cocktail hour will feature interactive displays and a silent auction. Then guests will enjoy a sumptuous dinner, accompanied by Joseph Carr wines and a brief program, followed by dancing and entertainment by Electric City Horns. Caregiver Conference 2012 Another Great Success
Our annual Caregiver Conference was held on Tuesday, June 12 at the Albany Marriott. Hundreds were in attendance for an outstanding day of educational workshops and presentations. Savvy Caregiver Series Available this Summer in Saratoga and Bethlehem
The Saavy Caregiver program is a free, five session-training series for family caregivers. At this week's Caregiver Conference, one of our speakers called it the "single most helpful thing" she did for herself after learning of her husband's Alzheimer's diagnosis.
