Urge Your State Legislator to Co-Sponsor and Support the Uniform Adult Guardianship and Protective Proceedings Jurisdiction Act
The Uniform Law Commission created the Uniform Adult Guardianship and Protective Proceedings Jurisdiction Act (UAGPPJA) to address these jurisdictional problems. UAGPPJA establishes a uniform set of rules for determining jurisdiction, simplifying the process for determining jurisdiction among multiple states in adult guardianship cases. It also establishes a framework that allows judges in different states to communicate with each other about adult guardianship cases.
Senator Hannon (S.7464) and Assemblymember Weinstein (A.10416) have introduced legislation to enact UAGPPJA in New York. For families coping with Alzheimer's disease, the process of negotiating multiple state court systems in an effort to appoint a guardian for their family member is an emotional and costly effort. This legislation would remove jurisdictional barriers and make the process easier for families and caregivers of those with Alzheimer's disease.
We strongly support this legislation and urge you to call your legislators and:
- Ask them to become a cosponsor of S.7464 and A.10416; and
- Urge them to swiftly pass this legislation.
You can use our special Uniform Adult Guardianship call center to find your legislator's phone number and let us know how the call went, or send an email.
