Alzheimer's cafe's originated in Europe in 1997, but are still relatively new in the United States. Two of the first in New York recently opened in the ALZNENY service area. Colonie Senior Services cut the ribbon on "Alz Cafe" at Beltrone Living Center at 6 Winners Circle in Albany on Tuesday, April 24. The Plains at Parish Homestead opened "Timeless," it's Alzheimer's cafe on March 14.
Caregivers often feel uncomfortable taking people with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias to public events. Alzheimer's cafes provide a warm, relaxing non-judgemental environment in which to socialize and learn more about the journey ahead.
Colonie Senior Services' first evening at Alz Cafe will be Tuesday, May 3 from 6 to 8 pm and will be a time to explore the new environment, enjoy refreshments and meet new people. For more information about Alz Cafe call Raema Mitchel at 518.459.2857 x324. Click here to see a WNYT Newschannel 13 story about the Alz Cafe opening.
Timeless, at The Plains at Parish Homestead at163 Heritage Circle on state Route 7 in Oneonta, is open every 3rd Wednesday of the month from 4 to 6 pm. For more information about Timeless call 607.267.4013 or visit www.plainsatparish.com. |
