SBE Leadership Development Course

Leadership Course 2011

"An effective leader is just an ordinary person inspiring other ordinary people to achieve extraordinary results," said Rodney Vandeveer, professor of Organizational Leadership and Supervision at Purdue University.

Professor Rodney Vandeveer is once again instructing the SBE Leadership Development Course. He brings more than thirty (30) years of industrial and business experience in management positions in human resources, training and development and manufacturing.

Now is the time to reserve your spot for the course that challenges you to refine your leadership skills as you better understand and improve how you interact with others. This interactive program is equally beneficial for those who are already in management and for those without prior management or supervisory experience. Subjects include the managing conflict, exploring how leadership is an attitude, a self-assessment on leadership style, generational differences in the workplace and much more.

Location: Atlanta, Georgia

Cost: SBE members - $590; non-members - $640

Employer Letters for SBE Certification

Something you may consider when you apply for certification is your option to request a letter be sent to your employer from the SBE President.

This letter states that you have obtained a level of SBE Certification.

While the certification itself looks good on a resume, this letter "steps it up" to acknowledge your efforts for career improvement in the broadcast engineering field. (Certification applicants can request the employer letter when they are filling out the certification or recertification application.)

The employer letter is only sent out when the applicant passes an exam.

Please visit the SBE website or contact the Certification Director, Megan Clappe, for more information.

This course will be of interest to those in both television and radio station facilities.  Telco lines and circuits are integral parts of most broadcast installations. We use regular phone lines for talk shows and contests, we use ISDN lines for remote broadcasts and STL backup, and we use T1 lines for STL applications and business telephone service. The broadcast engineer must have a good understanding of the various types of lines and protocols in order to deal with the telephone companies. It is also helpful to understand telco terms and lingo so that he or she can "speak the same language" when talking with testers, installers and field repair people.

The course provides a complete overview of all these topics, giving the student a working understanding of how the signal gets from end to end, how to troubleshoot telco problems and how to properly interface broadcast equipment to the telco world. Specific subjects include: analog (POTS) telephone service; digital switched telephone service; special services for broadcast stations; VoIP interworking with the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network); the cellular mobile network; broadcast interfacing; and troubleshooting.
