Webinar by SBE - The Nuts and Bolts of the FCC FM Allocation Procedures
Presented by Doug Vernier, CPBE
February 16 | |
What happens when you put nine FCC engineers into a room and have them read the FCC FM curves graph and none of the engineers agree? (You average all the engineers values and that becomes the digital version of the FCC curves computer program... really! ) More on this and other FCC FM allocation quirks including the infamous underground antennas. In addition, this webinar provides insight into how a station can improve its coverage or move its city of license using the rules.
This webinar will be useful to station engineers and managers in the process of understanding FM allocation and why their licenses limit transmission power and tower height and what they can do to improve coverage over the population they reach.

Presenter Doug Vernier, CPBE |
Presenting this webinar is Doug Vernier, CPBE. He has been a member of SBE since 1990 and has been in broadcasting for over 35 years. | Certified Television Operator (CTO) and Certified Radio Operator (CRO) |
SBE Certification is not an FCC requirement, but it is evidence of an individual's qualifications to serve as an operator at a broadcast station and will be useful when seeking employment or career advancement. Many television and radio stations, as well as colleges and high schools in the country, use the operator books and certification as a requirement.
The CTO and CRO certifications are unique in that there is a book that you purchase that contains all of the study material. You can purchase the CTO and CRO handbook from the SBE website. Once you have purchased the book and studied from it, you would send in the card that is in the back of the book. The card signifies your readiness to take the exam. The SBE national office will then generate the exam and send it to your proctor.
The CTO and CRO exams consist of 50 mulitple-choice questions. The exam is closed book and you are allotted one hour. The exam will be mailed back to SBE and graded. The results are sent only to the examinee. Passing score for the CTO and CRO exam is 90%.
Please visit the SBE website or contact the Certification Director, Megan Clappe, for more information. |

Course Author Gary Olson |
The intent of this course is to review the entire IP and file based architecture, the changes in workflows and the broad spectrum of technologies that make up the environment. The transition to an IP infrastructure supporting file based broadcast and production came about more quickly and completely than any of the other recent changes in the broadcast and production industry. The course will show how this is a transition that is dependent on people, process and technology.
This course will provide an understanding of:
- all the technical considerations that need to be taken into account in a file based architecture.
- the changing roles and responsibilities engineers will have in designing and maintaining these new systems.
- the new jobs / roles that are necessary in handling media in this architecture.
- the changes in workflow and business processes.
