Streaming Radio: a Tutorial for Broadcast Engineers - December 6

Streaming radio stations these days is far more complicated than in the past. Whether you're considering streaming for the first time, or looking to upgrade your streaming product, Chris Tarr will take you through all the things you need to consider, from choosing a streaming provider, sending metadata, royalty payments, service for mobile devices and more.

General managers, engineers, programmers or anyone looking to stream professionally over the Internet, even if they aren't simulcasting a terrestrial radio station, will all benefit from this webinar.

Presenting this webinar is Chris Tarr. He is an award-winning engineering manager, specializing in AM/FM broadcast, HD Radio, and radio automation systems. He was elected to the SBE's board of directors in 2006 and was awarded the 2008 Wulliman Award for distinguished service to the Engineering community in Southeast Wisconsin. You can see him live weekly as a co-host of the Nationally viewed webcast "This Week in Radio Tech" on Leo Laporte's "TWiT.tv" network and is a regular contributor to Radio Guide magazine. More Information and Registration

Earlier this year, SBE Chapter 11 member Bob Yankowitz, CPBE sent me a suggestion in the following email:

Megan,

One of the advantages (or not) of having a long commute to work is it gives me time to think of ways to get into trouble.  This morning one of those dangerous thoughts popped into my head, and so I thought I'd run it by you to see if you have any interest.

The certification abbreviations which members can attach to their names can be a bit obscure and unknown to those outside the broadcast engineering community.  Even others in the non-engineering part of our own business usually aren't aware of what the letters mean, or even what the certification program is about.

It occurred to me this is a circumstance for which the Internet was invented, to make it easy and painless to help explain the program, as well as to introduce the SBE to some of those who would otherwise not know anything about it.  My idea is simply to make the certification abbreviation link to a page on the SBE website that will explain the abbreviation and the Society.

This is a great suggestion that has been implemented. Below is an example of an email signature with the certifications linked to a description on the SBE website. Below that is a link for the certifications so that you can implement this into your own email signature.

Chief Operator Responsibilities - What should I be doing? - January 12 - 2:00 p.m. ET; with Dennis Baldridge, CPBE, 8-VSB, AMD, DRB, CBNT

SBE Members - $49; Non-Members - $69

This webinar reviews the duties to be performed by each station's Chief Operator.  Many chief operators come to this position with limited technical background; others are proficient with the technical aspects but are unfamiliar with all the requirements. The administrative responsibilities of the position will be described, such as station logs, EAS logs and official station records. Technical responsibilities, like whether or not the station is operating by the rules will also be explored.  Other topics include accuracy responsibilities related to the record keeping, who the chief operator reports to and authenticating the station's records.  In addition, sample templates of required documents will be provided.
