What does SBE Certification mean to you?

My broadcast career began in the days of the FCC First Class Radiotelephone license.  As a 20-year-old broadcast engineer, being a licensed professional was a definite point of pride.  Soon my license qualified me for my next two positions in the industry.

The rate of change in broadcasting is swift, and quickly the topics I mastered for the license exam became less and less relevant to my career -- then the FCC did away with the licensed operator requirement.  For me, the SBE's certification program more than filled this gap.

Most of my career has involved television news operations, mainly as a news department employee.  At times my CBTE certification helped establish my technical credibility with fellow broadcast engineers, and it certainly made a difference when pursuing new career opportunities.

Despite my 30-year career in television broadcast technical operations and engineering, my certification remained at the CBTE level.  There was no pressure from my various employers to advance my certification level, but last year I finally decided it was about time I challenge myself by sitting for the Senior-level certification exam.

To make it truly a test of my knowledge and abilities, I sat for the CSTE exam without preparation.  Passing that exam, especially in that way, was a major achievement, both personally and professionally.

Obtaining SBE certification has helped me professionally, by documenting for prospective employers my technical competency, and personally, by providing a sense of achievement and advancement.

SBE Certification - part 3
The last portion of SBE Certifications that may interest you are the SBE Specialist certifications. The SBE National Certification Committee created the Specialists certifications in order to establish a benchmark of individual strengths.

To qualify and apply for a specialist certification, you must currently hold a certification on the Broadcast Engineer, Senior Broadcast Engineer or Professional Broadcast Engineer level.
The specialist certification exams are three hours and consist of 50 multiple-choice questions. One essay-type question will be selected for each exam. The multiple choice portion is open book and the essay portion is closed book.

There are currently three SBE Specialist Certifications available:

8-VSB Specialist (8-VSB) The 8-VSB Specialist certification is designed to help evaluate an individual's ability to perform the necessary tasks to keep facilities operating properly. The exam will cover these areas of competency: transport stream, audio (AC-3), video (MPEG-2), PSIP, DTV standards documents and transmission systems.

AM Directional Specialist (AMD) The AMD Specialist certification is designed to help evaluate an individual's ability to perform the necessary tasks to keep facilities operating properly. AM radio stations can operate as non-directional with a signal tower or directional using more than one tower. While both require knowledge and skill to maintain in proper working order, the directional antenna system involves a higher degree of skill and understanding of RF theory. The exam will cover operation, maintenance and repair of a directional antenna system, FCC rules concerning directional operation, test equipment and safety procedures.

Digital Radio Broadcast Specialist (DRB) The DRB Specialist certification is designed to help evaluate an individual's ability to perform the necessary tasks to build and keep facilities operating properly. It will qualify an individual's knowledge of digital radio broadcasting including audio processing, studio-to-transmitter links and transmission of multi-channel digital program streams. The exam will include knowledge of importers, exporters, the various methods of combining analog and digital transmitters to antenna systems, delivery of digital audio signals and data to transmitter sites, transmitter emission mask measurements, AM and FM FCC rules, monitoring of digital signals and bandwidth requirements for AM antenna systems.

Education Spotlight - NEW SBE University Course
                                                      SBE University
The purpose of this course is to give the student an introduction to the fundamental concepts of computer networking. The course will cover computer topologies both physical and logical, media types, the OSI model, and local area networking. It will cover some legacy material but is primarily about Ethernet, TCP/IP and other current computer networking protocols. Hardware such as switches and routers are covered and software such as VLAN, VPN, and NAT as well. Some basic troubleshooting, security, and administrative procedures is also reviewed.

The course is meant as an introduction covering many subjects at a high level in order to assist the broadcaster in passing the SBE Certified Broadcast Networking Technologist exam.
This course will take the student through every facet of AM antenna systems in all their forms, both dealing with each element or variation separately and pulling the elements together to show how they are used in concert.

This course will be of interest to those in both television and radio station facilities, and will give the student a working understanding of how the signal gets from end to end, how to troubleshoot telco problems and how to properly interface broadcast equipment to the telco world.

The purpose of the SBE 8-VSB course is to give the student an overview of the 8-VSB system from end to end, providing all the basic information needed to understand the nature of 8-VSB modulation and to recognize deficiencies in the transmitted signal.

This course will take the student through the modeling and measurement process specifically for AM broadcast antennas, providing a general understanding of the process and procedures as well as operation of the recommended software.

Upon completion of this course, the student should have a clear understanding of the proper design, installation and maintenance of an FM transmission system.

The purpose of this course is to give the student a good overall understanding of the various types of networks used in an AM transmission system, the situations in which each might be used and calculating the leg values thereof.
