| What does SBE Certification mean to you? |
By Paul Claxton, CPBE, CBNT
Project Engineer IT Management Specialist American Forces Network Broadcast Center
SBE Chapter Certification Chairman - Ch. 131
What does SBE certification mean to me? It means that I met a measurement of experience and knowledge set by an outside source directed by input from the industry I worked in.
When applying for a job in the television engineering industry it serves as method of proving my value to a potential employer and helps my resume stand out a bit from the others.
To my employer it means to them that I've made the effort and taken the time to test my knowledge against one of many available standards and once achieved I continue to stay involved with education and learning in order to recertify. If you have a story about what SBE certification means to you, please email the Certification Director, Megan Clappe. |

| SBE Certification part 2 |
|
Last month I went over the entry-level certifications that don't require any experience in order to take an SBE certification exam. This month, I want to give you some certification options if you have been working in the broadcasting engineering field.
Keep in mind that you may apply for the following certifications when you qualify for them. You do not need to do one level before going onto the other.
If you have five years of broadcast engineering or related technology then you may want to look into taking the following exams: Certified Broadcast Radio Engineer, Certified Broadcast Television Engineer, Certified Audio Engineer or Certified Video Engineer. These exams consist of 50 multiple-choice questions and are open book with an allotted 3 hours of exam time. Passing score for the CBRE, CBTE, CEA and CEV is 70%. For more information on the CBRE and CBTE and suitable substitutions for experience and applications click here http://www.sbe.org/CBRE_and_CBTE.php. For CEA and CEV inquiries click here http://www.sbe.org/CEA_and_CEV.php.
If you currently have 10 years of broadcast engineering or related technology experience, consider applying for the Certified Senior Radio Engineer or Certified Senior Television Engineer. These exams also consist of 50 multiple-choice questions and are open book but they also contain an essay question. The essay question is closed book, but the multiple-choice portion is open book. Passing score for the CSRE and CSTE is a combined score of 84%. For more information on the CSRE and CSTE certifications and suitable substitutions for experience and applications click here http://www.sbe.org/CSRE_and_CSTE.php.
If you already hold a senior certification or a Professional Electrical Engineer's license and have 20 years of service in broadcast or related technology, you may obtain Certified Professional Broadcast Engineer without taking an exam. Applicants must supply three letters of reference along with other backup material with the appropriate application. For more information on the CPBE requirements and the application, click here http://www.sbe.org/CPBE.php.

| SBE University Courses Now Available |
Isn't it time you learned more about the online self-study courses available on SBE University?
This course will take the student through every facet of AM antenna systems in all their forms, both dealing with each element or variation separately and pulling the elements together to show how they are used in concert.
This course will be of interest to those in both television and radio station facilities, and will give the student a working understanding of how the signal gets from end to end, how to troubleshoot telco problems and how to properly interface broadcast equipment to the telco world.
The purpose of the SBE 8-VSB course is to give the student an overview of the 8-VSB system from end to end, providing all the basic information needed to understand the nature of 8-VSB modulation and to recognize deficiencies in the transmitted signal.
This course will take the student through the modeling and measurement process specifically for AM broadcast antennas, providing a general understanding of the process and procedures as well as operation of the recommended software.
Upon completion of this course, the student should have a clear understanding of the proper design, installation and maintenance of an FM transmission system.
The purpose of this course is to give the student a good overall understanding of the various types of networks used in an AM transmission system, the situations in which each might be used and calculating the leg values thereof.
