Listen-up --
What does SBE Certification mean to me... isn't the issue. The 'issue' is what does SBE Certification mean to your employer or potential employer.

As a former employer and now as an educator - I have been asked this very question. I guess it's like asking, "What's in it for me?"

I'm always amazed that people can't seem to visualize or grasp that it's the EXTRA steps a person takes that define them. We call it positive
personal attributes.....

Question:  Did Mother Teresa say to herself, 'what do I need to do to become a Saint' or did she live her life practicing positive
personal attributes that defined her life and made her a Saint?

So "Wake-up" and smell the coffee - define yourself with SBE Certification- it's NOT the paper- it's the attitude!

SBE Certification
Are you new to the broadcast engineering field?

There are four entry-level certifications that may appeal to you.

If you are a working operator who wishes to certify your skills and knowledge or if you wish to become certified as your entry into the world of broadcasting then the Certified Television Operator or Certified Radio Operator certification may be right for you.

SBE Certification is not an FCC requirement, but it is evidence of an individual's qualifications to serve as an operator at a broadcast station and will be useful when seeking employment or career advancement. Many television and radio stations, as well as colleges and a couple of high schools in the country, use the operator books and certification as a requirement.

If the operator level of certification does not appeal to you then take a look at the Certified Broadcast Technologist or the Certified Broadcast Networking Technologist.

There are two ways that you can obtain the CBT certification; by holding a valid FCC General Radio Telephone or Amateur Extra license and meeting the service requirement or by passing the CBT exam. Click here for more information on service requirements and for the CBT application.

The Certified Broadcast Networking Technologist is another certification that you may consider at anytime in your career. The CBNT was designed for persons who wish to demonstrate  basic familiarity with networking hardware as utilized in business and audio/video applications in broadcast facilities. Click here for more information on the CBNT and for applications.

For the above certifications there is no experience required.
Please visit the SBE website or contact the Certification Director, Megan Clappe, for more information.
Education Spotlight
Ennes Workshop at NAB
Location: Las Vegas, Nevada
Date: Saturday, April 10
Registration: Available to full conference NAB attendees
Register Now to Attend NAB and the Ennes Workshop

The major live program of the year for Ennes is the full-day session at NAB. This all day, jam-packed session begins at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. The session often draws 500 people throughout the day, mostly broadcast engineers, directors of engineering and above. Audio over IP is rapidly becoming the mature, standardized, ubiquitous means of dealing with audio. The day starts out with an early bird "101" presentation on this topic presented by Skip Pizzi. His new book (co-authored with Steve Church) "Audio over IP" is published by Focal Press, and more than a few will be given away as prizes to early bird program attendees.

In the afternoon, Terry Baun, Director of Engineering and Operations for Wisconsin Public Broadcasting and a past president of the SBE, presents "Management/Media Skills and the Future of Broadcast Engineering." The economic downturn has been especially challenging, and it may be that management and career skills are just as important, if not more so, than technical skills for the time being.

There are other issues the SBE/Ennes program at NAB speaks to; CAP and EAS, wireless microphones and of course the FM digital power increase, are all on the agenda.

Traveling to and staying in Las Vegas is more reasonable than it has been in many years. Given affordable travel costs, and with all that is changing in the profession, this is the year to attend the NAB, and the Ennes/SBE sessions.
