Summer Rowing Program:
The Cambridge Boat Club will be hosting a Summer Junior Rowing program again in 2012. The Program is designed to introduce high school boys and girls to the fundamentals and joys of sculling. Emphasis will be placed on water-safety, proper boat handling, the development of a smooth and efficient stroke, the elements of good physical conditioning and teamwork. . This is a non-competitive program for both experienced rowers and true novices and is open to the children of both CBC members and non-members.

Students will begin sculling in stable, learn-to-row shells and will be encouraged to move up in boat class as their skills develop. Some classes will be conducted in double or quadruple sculls to work on team rowing.

All students will take a 'flip' test before they are allowed on the water. They will intentionally flip a single scull about 30 feet from the dock, get onto it, and swim the boat back to the dock.

Focusing on skill development and boat handling, students will increase their daily mileage until, at the end of the session, they will have the opportunity to row over the Head of the Charles racecourse.

Those with previous sculling experience will be given drills and time to work on improving their boat moving ability.

Sessions

There will be four, two-week sessions of morning classes and four, two-week sessions of afternoon classes:

Session 1: June 18 - June 29: AM and PM classes

Session 2: July 2 - July 13: AM and PM classes

Session 3: July 16 - July 27: AM and PM classes

Session 4: July 30 - August 10: AM and PM classes

All classes will be focused on sculling in singles and doubles and will be limited to 8 rowers.

Applicants may apply for any combination of Sessions and Classes; e.g., Session 1, AM classes only; Sessions 2 and 3, PM classes only; etc.

CBC reserves the right to modify the focus of the classes depending upon the capabilities and characteristics of the applicants; e.g., if several novices apply, we may be able to offer a learn-to-row class; if several experienced rowers apply we may be able to offer a regatta focused racing class.

Coaches will be Dale Wickenheiser, Head Crew Coach at the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School and Matt Zatorski, Varsity Boy's Crew Coach at the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School and others.
