FOCRLS Faculty Grants Awarded for Fall 2011

Please join Friends of CRLS in congratulating our latest Faculty Grant recipients! (See list below.) Our 10 Grantees for Fall 2011 were chosen from among a wide variety of programs and departments.  This brings our total of grant recipients since 2007 to 82, reflecting the extraordinarily diverse programs, courses, faculty talents and student interests at CRLS.

Grant recipients reflect the commitment and vision of faculty and other CRLS staff to the academic and social development of CRLS students, and FOCRLS' deep interest in supporting the ongoing professional development  of the teaching community at CRLS.

Our review panel of 8 CRLS parents and community members gave careful consideration to each proposal, awarding grants of up to $1000 each, totaling $9,000 in this grant cycle.  There are currently two grant cycles a year, the next being in Spring 2012.

We thank our many donors: family, friends, alumni, and business leaders, for supporting the power of the ideas of our exemplary CRLS educators.

Seeking Science Students to Join the CRLS Science Olympiad Team

Science Olympiad is a 25 year old national competition. CRLS has won the MA State Championship in the past and went to the nationals.

15 students are needed to compete in at least 20 events that cover all scientific disciplines: Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Engineering. There are three different types of events: Laboratory events, Study events, and Building events.

Student teams meet for about 90 minutes weekly on each event that they do. Most students do 2-3 events. Students work closely with Cambridge School Volunteer advisors who are current or former college students, scientists, engineers, and Doctors. Volunteers serve as a sounding board, troubleshooter, or researcher to help guide students in preparation for the state-wide competition against 40 other schools.

Students schedule meetings after school when they can between 2:30-5:30 M-F. Interested students should see Ms. Newton in Room 2405 or email her at knewton@cpsd.us. Required team meeting is Wednesday 1/18 in the Library Fiction room 2:45-4:45.
