FAMILY INVOLVEMENT at CRLS

CRLS SCHOOL COUNCIL: The State Education Reform Act mandates that there be an elected School Improvement Council in each public school made up of parents, teachers, students and community representatives, and co-chaired by the principal. The CRLS School Council usually meets on the last Tuesday of the month and is responsible for advising the principal in setting educational goals, identifying educational needs, reviewing the school's budget and creating a school improvement plan. Parents/guardians serve staggered 2-year terms so that some members are always new and some are experienced. Elections are well publicized each spring, and interested candidates must submit a nomination form in order for their names to be included on the ballot. Contact the Parent Representatives from your child's Learning Community or an at-Large Rep to discuss school issues or to place items on the agenda. Currently there is a vacancy for Learning Community- C. Please contact Greta Hardina ghardina@cpsd.us the Parent Liaison if you are interested in filling in as interim Parent Rep in LC C.

Tips to keep in mind when you're organizing or hosting holiday parties with alcohol.

The holiday season is a time for Cambridge families to celebrate, but it's also one of the biggest drinking times of the year. We want Cambridge families to have a happy and safe season - which includes keeping alcohol off-limits to kids before, during, and after holiday parties and celebrations.

  1. Set some ground rules beforehand. Make sure your kids know what you expect from them, and remind them that they and their friends are not allowed to drink any alcohol that is present.
  2. Consider the age of your tween or teen. When discussing ground rules, it may help to keep the conversation concrete. Focus on why people drink, how people look and smell when they over indulge, or alcohol's effects on the body and the brain.
  3. During the party, remember to keep the alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks on separate tables. This will make it easier to make sure teens and tweens are drinking the drinks that have been provided for them.
  4. Talk to other parents about their holiday celebration rules.
  5. Clear up, lock up. After the party, be sure to clean up and put your alcohol away.
  6. For the New Year, consider making a few resolutions with your child, such as a resolution to spend more time together, or to talk more openly about drugs or alcohol use.

Teens Paid to Shovel Snow for Seniors

The Council on Aging, with some assistance from the Office of Workforce Development, puts together a list of teens each winter who are interested in being hired to shovel snow for seniors or residents with disabilities who might otherwise have difficulty clearing snow from their property...the COA helps to make the connection between the two. If you know of any teen who'd be interested in adding their name to the list, please share the application with them, and have them return it to OWD (either at 51 or at the Youth Employment Center at CRLS), or to the Senior Center. Click here for the  snow shoveling application
