Parent Teacher Conferences are coming:
Tuesday, October 25, 2011 from 2:30-3:30 p.m. and Thursday, October 27, 2011 from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
These meetings will provide you with an opportunity to discuss your child's performance with his/her teachers. Students are welcome to accompany their parents to the conferences. If you are unable to attend either session, individual teacher conferences may be scheduled by calling your child's Learning Community (LC) Office during the school day, or preferably, contacting the individual teachers by e-mail.
To make best use of the Parent Teacher Conference opportunities, we suggest:
- Bring your student with you so that he or she can be a partner in this conversation about the semester's progress.
- Bring your student's progress report with you.
- Be sure you know the first and last name of each teacher, the class subject, and the classroom.
- Check the absent teacher list when you arrive, to be sure none of your student's teachers are absent.
- Grab a map of CRLS (available in the main entrance). Student guides will be posted around the school to help you find classrooms.
- Sign up for an individual conference with teachers in their classrooms. The signup lists will be placed right outside each classroom door, and each conference lasts for ten minutes.
- Try to respect the teacher's schedule, remembering that other parents also wish to see the teacher.
- Don't assume that no line in front of one classroom means the other three classrooms also won't have a line. Some classes attract more parents than others.
- Go around to all classrooms to sign up for appointments. Give yourself some time between appointments to move from room to room.
- If you need extra time with a teacher, arrange an appointment for another day.
- Limited parking will be available after 5:30 on Thursday 10/27 in Harvard's Felton Street garage.
If you can't attend the conferences, try one of these other ways to learn about your child's classes:
- Use your Edline account to learn about assigned work. (If you need help with Edline, send a message to edline-support@cpsd.us.)
- Email your students' teachers directly. (Teacher email addresses include the teacher's first initial and last name, such as ATeacher@cpsd.us.)
- Schedule a telephone conference with a teacher.
- Arrange an individual appointment at CRLS. (Call the Learning Community office or email the teacher directly.)
- Contact your student's guidance counselor to arrange a meeting of several teachers at once at a time that is convenient for you and them, before, during or after school.

The State Education Reform Act mandates that there be an elected School Improvement Council in each public school made up of parents, teachers, students and community representatives, and co-chaired by the principal. The CRLS School Council usually meets on the last Tuesday of the month and is responsible for advising the principal in setting educational goals, identifying educational needs, reviewing the school's budget, and creating a school improvement plan. Parents/guardians serve staggered 2-year terms so that some are always new and some experienced. Elections are well publicized each spring, and interested candidates must submit a nomination form in order for their names to be included on the ballot. |

Tips for parents on teen drinking:
The Reality Check campaign helps parents be clear with their teens about underage drinking, and connect with other parents and resources. Here, you'll find tips and strategies for talking with your kids about peer pressure, substance abuse, and more! Visit www.realitycheckworks.org
|
- Use "Celebrity Rehab" to your advantage. Actors struggling with alcohol or drug problems can be effective conversation starters to find out what your teens think about alcohol.
- Sibling saviors: Enlist your tween's older sibling to help show that underage drinking isn't just uncool-it can be deadly.
- Tough Love without a Twist: Teach your kids how to say "no" to alcohol, including from peers. Let them know that you're there to help, not punish when it comes to peer pressure and drinking.
- Mealtime is check in time. Use family meals as a chance to bring up topics like drinking and substance abuse, as well as sports and school. Get everyone's input.
- Mother Gaga. You don't have to be Lady Gaga to be the role model your kids need and want/deserve. As their parent, you will always take center stage in their lives.
- Wanted: Real Parents. Be real and be yourself with your kids about underage drinking. It may help your teen open up about their own challenges.
