SUMMER ASSIGNMENTS ARE NOT JUST FOR ENGLISH CLASSES ANYMORE!
Are you taking a math class when we come back next fall? If your answer is "YES!" then you have a summer assignment called a pre-course packet. Pre-course packets feature skills and material that you need to know before you begin your math class. Finishing the packet is a requirement and teachers will use the packets to make quizzes or tests or they might count the packet as homework. Packets are being given out by your current math teacher. If you do not currently have a math class, you can get them from the Learning Community S Office. The packets are also available on the Cambridge Public Schools web site found at http://www3.cpsd.us/Academics/Math/Math_Summer Questions? - please talk with your math teacher or see Mr. Gaglione. Have a great summer! |

Photography Department News:
Two CRLS Photography students won national awards in New York City from the Scholastic Art Awards this spring. Nic Guevara won a silver key for his portfolio of homeless people in Harvard Square and Sara Rosenburg won a silver key for a single photograph. The Boston Globe honored all of the Massachusetts national awardees with a beautiful reception attended by both Sara and Nic, and their families. They both travelled to New York City for the Awards ceremony at Lincoln Center in May. The Scholastic Art Awards are yearly awards and this year CRLS received 50 state awards and 2 national ones. There is a very competitive jurying process with very few young artists rising to the top. Our students are in good company with past winners, Richard Avedon and Andy Warhol! We wish many more honors and awards for them. Photo Teachers Debi Milligan and Archy LaSalle

CRLS Students Paint a Mural at Cambridge Hopstital:
Ms. Menges' 9th Grade Portrait class at CRLS spent 7 weeks planning, designing, and painting an underwater-themed mural at the emergency pediatric ward of the Cambridge Hospital this past semester. It all started a year ago when a former student asked if her aunt, a registration nurse at the hospital, could talk with her about making the pediatric ward a more welcoming environment for the young patients. Since then both her fall 2010 and spring 2011 classes have spent every day of class time, for over two months, on creating their own unique mural, from beginning to end. They have learned to be cooperative, efficient, flexible, and professional in a real-world project that helps them grow as responsible, community-minded artists.
Here is a link to a public album documenting last semester's process: |

WHAT IS RISE UP?
Rise Up is a program for incoming 9th grade students from schools all over the district. The program is designed to bolster academic skills while acclimating students to 9th grade. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of physical activity at the beginning of the day to encourage sportsmanship and respect. Further, research shows that physical activity prior to academic work increases student cognitive retention. Academic classes include two of the three choices: math, science or English language arts. Also this summer, Rise Up will be incorporating an "Imagining the Future" component where students will work on study skills and explore opportunities during and beyond high school. The program will go on several field trips including tours of some local colleges/universities. Eligible participants may receive a stipend through the mayor's program or receive general high school credits. Students will meet next year's classmates early while getting to know several of their 9th grade teachers including Kathleen Corcoran, Michael Jordan, Quinn Soto, Laurraince LeCorps, Jack Haverty and Andrew Miller.

The Cambridge READS title this year is 'War" by Sebastian Junger and will be a tenth grade option on the CRLS Summer Reading List.
Cambridge READS is the citywide reading program sponsored by the Cambridge Public Library. Multiple copies of the book will be available in each library so that citizens can have the opportunity to read the same book over the course of the next year. The author will make a free public appearance one evening in the fall (usually in October) and CRLS students have the opportunity to have a presentation by the author during that day. We usually make this book an option for our 10th graders, as we have done this year, so that we can have 10th graders attend the author's presentation.
About the book and the author (from Amazon.com):
Sebastian Junger is the internationally acclaimed author of The Perfect Storm, which spent over three years on the New York Times bestsellers list and was the basis for a major motion picture starring George Clooney. He is also the author of the New York Times bestsellers 'Fire' and 'A Death in Belmont'. He is a contributing editor to Vanity Fair, and has been awarded a National Magazine Award and an SAIS Novartis Prize for journalism.
In WAR, Sebastian Junger turns his brilliant and empathetic eye to the reality of combat--the fear, the honor, and the trust among men in an extreme situation whose survival depends on their absolute commitment to one another. His on-the-ground account follows a single platoon through a 15-month tour of duty in the most dangerous outpost in Afghanistan's Korengal Valley. Through the experiences of these young men at war, he shows what it means to fight, to serve, and to face down mortal danger on a daily basis.
