SPRING SEMESTER PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES

March 15, 6:00-8:00 and March 16, 2:30-3:30 PM

All Parent Teacher Conferences will be at the Main Campus, 459 Broadway

*TEACHERS FORM THE 9TH GRADE CAMPUS WILL MEET WITH PARENTS AT THE MAIN CAMPUS

TIPS FOR CRLS PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES

1.     HAVE THE NAME (FIRST AND LAST) OF EACH TEACHER AND THE SUBJECT TAUGHT.

Teacher lists, with names and classrooms, may be picked up in the lobby.

2.      CHECK THE ABSENT TEACHER LIST WHEN YOU ARRIVE.

A few teachers will be unavoidably absent.

3.      MAPS OF CRLS WILL BE AVAILABLE IN THE MAIN ENTRANCE.

Student guides will be posted around the school to help find classrooms.

4.      PLEASE BE SURE TO BRING YOUR CHILD'S PROGRESS REPORT.

5.      CONFERENCES WITH TEACHERS AND STAFF WILL BE HELD IN THEIR CLASSROOMS.

Sign up lists with time slots will be placed right outside each classroom door.

6.      EACH CONFERENCE SLOT LASTS FOR TEN MINUTES.

Please do not keep teachers longer if others are waiting.

7.      SOME CLASSES ATTRACT MORE PARENTS THAN OTHERS.

Do not assume that because there's no line in front of one classroom that the other three will be the same.

8.     IT IS GENERALLY ADVISABLE TO GO AROUND TO ALL CLASSROOMS AND SIGN UP  OR  ALL CONFERENCES AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SESSION.

That way if the lists fill up you won't end up being disappointed.

9.      IT IS A GOOD IDEA TO BRING YOUR STUDENT WITH YOU.

If that isn't possible, ask him/her to tell you the best way to go from one class to another.  This might help you get around the school more easily.

10.        IF YOU NEED TO SPEAK AT LENGTH TO A TEACHER/COUNSELOR; PLEASE FIND ANOTHER TIME TO DO IT.

Fill out a PARENT-TEACHER APPOINTMENT FORM at the Main Entrance for another appointment or contact the teacher directly.

But conferences aren't the only way to learn about your student's progress!

If you can't attend the conferences, try one of these other ways to learn about your child's classes:

ü      Use your Edline account to learn about assigned work.  (If you need help with Edline, send a message to edline-support@cpsd.us.)

ü      Email your students' teachers directly.  (Teacher email addresses include the teacher's first initial and last name, such as ATeacher@cpsd.us.)

ü      Schedule a telephone conference with a teacher.

ü      Arrange an individual appointment at CRLS.  (Call the Learning Community office or email the teacher directly.)

ü      Contact your student's guidance counselor to arrange a meeting of several teachers at once at a time that is convenient for you and them, before, during or after school.

CRLS CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY

CRLS celebrates Black History this month with a top-notch lecture series, student panel discussion specifically for teachers, student designed and facilitated workshops and capstone assembly to celebrate the talent and contributions of people in our community. The lecture series explore the theme: Unsung Heroes: What's Not In Your Textbook and included: comedian and activist Sampson McCormick on Growing Up Gay in Black America, Marvin Venay on Race and Politics, Sally Haslanger on Stereotype Threat and Academic Achievement, Peniel Joseph on Black Power in the Age of Barack Obama, and Khari Milner on the School to Prison Pipeline. Seniors Cheyenne Wyzzard-Jones and Alice Nakibuuka offered a workshop on the achievement gap and senior Eli Ward offered a workshop on race in sports. The school will celebrate with a capstone assembly featuring the step team, Haitian Club, Ethiopian Club, Chorus, and the undefeated boys basketball team on the Friday before February vacation.

The MIT/Wellesley Upward Bound Program is currently recruiting 9th and 10th graders.  Applications are available in the Guidance Counselors' office and the College and Career Resource Center (CCRC, Room R100).  You may also pick up an application at our MIT office located at:  265 Massachusetts Ave. building N52-130 (next to the MIT Museum building-first floor).  We can also be reached at:  617-253-5124.

Program Description:

Our program is a year-round (from time of entrance until graduation from high school), federally sponsored, educational program serving seventy (75) low-income and/or first generation eighth and high school college-bound students from the Cambridge community.  The Program stresses the development of academic skills and motivation for students who might not traditionally be considered college-bound.

National Honor Society News

Invitations to apply for membership in the National Honor Society have been mailed out to juniors who have a current official GPA of 87 or greater, including transfer credits.  The invitation includes important information about the application process, including steps that students can get started on immediately.

There will be a mandatory informational meeting on Tuesday March 1st during homeroom in the cafeteria for all eligible students interested in applying.  The application packet will be distributed at that meeting.  The application packet will enable the Faculty Council to carefully consider each student's candidacy in relationship to the four pillars of the National Honor Society, which are Scholarship, Character, Service, and Leadership.  The completed application packets, including all supporting documentation will be due by Thursday March 10, 2011, and any applications submitted after that date will not be considered.

If a student did not receive an invitation, but believe they meet the GPA criteria, he or she can check with Mr. Mili.

FYI...

The Cambridge Parent Advisory Council on Special Education regretfully announces that our planned workshop, a screening of the documentary Including Samuel and Discussion with Joe Petner will be rescheduled to the Spring due to an unforeseen family emergency. Cambridge PAC will still meet on Thursday, February 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Peab ody School in Cambridge, 70 Rindge Avenue. Our brief business meeting will include informal discussion of inclusion resources in our district and the approval of our November minutes. Copies of the WestEd Review of 504 Plan Implementation in Cambridge will be available, to be discussed in March. Copies of the Superintendent's Innovation Agenda will also be available. Childcare will be provided for those who would like to join the discussion and connect with other parents of children with learning differences and special needs.

A Transition Service Workshop Series

Presented by the CRLS Office of Special Education

Hosted by Jennifer Garcia, Transition Coordinator

March 2nd, 2011

6pm - 8pm in the CRLS Library

The workshop will focus on Adult Service Agencies and the Department of Developmental Services (DDS). Local adult day habilitation and vocational service providers will offer information about their programs and services. Staff from the Department of Developmental Services will also be on-hand to discuss how they work corroboratively with families to connect students with services upon completion of high school.

Parents and Teens we need you! Help the Connect2Prevent project and earn $25 each.

If you got an invitation in the mail please send your consents back to us. If you haven't yet gotten an invitation keep your eyes open in the mail. We are mailing to a new group soon.

Connect2Prevent is partnering with the Cambridge Prevention Coalition and Cambridge Public Schools on a study to learn about parent-teen communication about alcohol and other drugs. We are recruiting parent-teen pairs to take a brief online survey that includes questions about how parents and teens communicate about the topic.

To participate, all you and your teen (12-17 years) need to do is complete separate surveys. Surveys can be completed at home, or the Connect2Prevent team will make arrangements. Parents and teens will each receive $25 for participation.

For more information about the Connect2Prevent study, please contact Lucy Lorin at 617-401-2284 or lorin@ndri.org.
