Looking for CRLS Families to Host an Iraqi Youth Leader in your home in August of 2011.

This summer, the Boston area will host 12 Iraqi youth, ages 15-17, for two weeks of activities to build their leadership and civic engagement skills, and families are needed to host them.  Last summer, five CRLS families acted as hosts and enjoyed the experience!  During the day the students will be engaged in leadership activities and learning about the city of Boston, so that that main requirement is an evening meal and place to sleep for the Iraqi students.

In addition, CRLS students whose families host an Iraqi student are eligible to apply to participate in the program.  Participants start with a week in Vermont, followed by the two weeks in Boston and one week in Washington, DC.  All program costs, including transportation, are covered!

NEWS from Friends of Cambridge Rindge and Latin School (FOCRLS)

Behind every great school is a committed community of supporters

Become a part of that community at CRLS

We hope that our news will inspire you, during this holiday period, to give as generously as you can to support the Friends of Cambridge Rindge and Latin School (FOCRLS) - As an entirely volunteer-run organization, you can be assured that the money we raise directly supports our students - not costly rentals and staff salaries.

To make a donation online, go to www.focrls.org. Or you can send a check to: FOCRLS, P.O. Box 39-1541, Cambridge, MA 02139.

Your donation will go to support these important programs: Faculty Innovation Grants, the Unsung Hero Program, Student Travel Fellowships, Faculty Distinction Awards, First Scholars Awards (Scholarships).

FALL 2010 FOCRLS NEWS

FOCRLS Fall 2010 Faculty Innovation Grants Awarded

Since 2007, FOCRLS has sponsored the Faculty Innovation Grants program. Teachers, guidance counselors, academic club advisors, submit grant proposals of up to $1000 to enrich the academic or social development experience for CRLS students. This year our growing number of contributors made it possible, for the first time, to offer TWO grant cycles! We thank our many donors: family, friends, alumni, and business leaders, for supporting the power of the ideas of our exemplary CRLS educators.

The Fall 2010 Faculty Innovation Grant awardees are:

Kathleen Fitzgerald (Internship and Service Learning Specialist) "Storied Landscapes - Exploration and Sharing of Cultural and Natural Resources Across Urban and Rural Youth Communities"

Conrad Hauck (Engineering Instructor, RSTA)
"Funding for Robotics Club: FIRST Robotics 2011 Season"

Matt Landry (Media Instructor) "Experimental Media Lab"

Michele Watson Maxwell (Commercial Design Teacher)
"Anti-Discrimination Poster Awareness Campaign"

Deborah Milligan (Photography Teacher) "Mix It Up - Cook it Up"

Robert Ponte (Instrumental Music Teacher) "Contemporary Jazz at CRLS"

Jaci Rubin (Cooperative Education Instructor) "Create a Press Kit for Cooperative Education"

Jessica Young (Art Teacher) "Animation Sound Studio"

First Scholars Awards

Fall 2010 brought another FOCRLS "First", the launching of its First Scholars Awards. These new scholarships -- $1000 each to two academically-qualified low-income seniors who will be the first in their families to attend four-year institutions of higher learning - were just announced and will be awarded in the spring.

Our New Website!

FOCRLS has a beautiful new website, thanks to the work of graphic designer Barby Prothro, mother of a CRLS grad. Visit us at: www.focrls.org (and please become a fan of our Facebook page as well)!

Another Successful FOCRLS House Party!

On December 5th, 9th grade parents Donna and Ray Erikson, held a gathering at their home on behalf of FOCRLS.  Speakers included members of the CRLS leadership team, and faculty members and students who have been recipients of grants and awards through FOCRLS. Other guests included current, prospective, and former parents of CRLS students, alumni, school committee members, and community members.  CRLS photography teacher Debi Milligan brought a slide show of faculty members who have received grant awards for innovative projects from Friends of CRLS.  Local businesses showed their support through the delicious array of food and beverages generously donated by Petsi Pies, the Middle East Restaurant, the S&S Deli/Restaurant, the Wine and Cheese Cask, and Zing! Pizza.  Behind every great school is a committed community of supporters and supporters-in-the-making such as this great group! Over $3,000 was raised from this event.

Upcoming FOCRLS Meeting

January 19th  7:30-9:00 pm

We'd love to have you involved in our work. Coming up in the spring we have another house party, the Mayfair Raffle, and a "special event" in the planning, so we need many hands. We are also working on outreach to alumni, and to the Cambridge business community, and could use your help!

The next FOCRLS meeting is Wednesday January 19 (7:30-9 pm) in the Library of the 9th grade campus  in the old Longfellow School building on Broadway, corner of Antrim Street. Come and learn more about CRLS and FOCRLS, and network with other parents over conversation and snacks.

If you can't make it to that meeting, but would like to be involved, please contact us at focrls@gmail.com or 617-275-6338

Friends of Cambridge Rindge and Latin School (FOCRLS) is a 501(c)3 tax-deductible non-profit public charity founded by two parents in January '07.  The mission of FOCRLS is to raise private funds from within the Cambridge community to support and enrich the academic and social development programs at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, and in so doing,  promote achievement for all students and a greater community investment in the future of Cambridge youth.

Sincerely,
Greta Hardina CRLS
