CRLS Robotics Club

About Team 97

Team 97 is one of the oldest FIRST Robotics teams in the country.  The team was founded 12 years ago at M.I.T. and it has been run out of CRLS in the RSTA engineering lab for the last three years. The FIRST robotics team is currently seeking support in the form of funds and technical help.

The FIRST Robotics competition has seen explosive growth in popularity since its founding and today over 2,500 teams participate in the competition.  The team consists of students from all high school grade levels and experiences.  Many of the students have no prior experience in robotics and FIRST provides them with valuable hands-on experiences in mechanical and electrical engineering, manufacturing, physics and math for engineering, programming and computer aided design as well as fundraising and business skills.  In addition to academic skills, we also learn many personal and professional development skills including organization, leadership, work ethic, and teamwork. FIRST Robotics club members work with engineers and business mentors to help them build the robot from scratch.

The club meets Wednesdays after school until January when the specifications for this year's robots will be released. The building period is between January 2010 and February 2011.  During this time, the team meets every week day for three hours and on Saturdays for four hours.  Regional competition takes place in March 2011 and the national competition is in April 2011.

The teams goal for this coming season is to win the Boston Regional Tournament and to qualify for the National Tournament.  We are currently seeking sponsors to help us with expenses associated with the building of the robot, such as parts and components, equipment, shipping cost,  and technical assistance. LABVIEW programming experience would be particularly useful.

We would greatly appreciate any donation you could make toward our effort. Contact the engineering Instructor Conrad Hauck (chauck@cpsd.us) for more information on how you can be of help or if you have a child that may be interested in joining the club.

The Harvard Black Law Students Association (BLSA) Leadership and Mentoring Program (LAMP) is a mentoring program for high school students.  Each high school student is paired with his or her own mentor who is a Harvard Law School student and a

member of BLSA.  We encourage each mentor-mentee pair to meet outside of our formal programming to develop their relationship.  In addition to the one on one time between mentors and mentees, LAMP organizes one or two group activities per month in

which all mentees and mentors are invited to participate; these activities serve as an opportunity for the entire group to meet each other.  We strive to have a balance of programming that includes academic programs as well as fun, social

activities. In the past, some of our past events have included Bowling Nights, College Panels, Holiday Parties etc.. Overall, we hope that LAMP is a positive experience for the high school students and provides an opportunity for them to connect

with positive role models. For more information email hblsalamp@gmail.com

Where: Media Arts Studio 454 Broadway, across from CRLS Main Campus

The second unit, focusing on news documentary production, will give middle school students hands on experience in field production, script writing, and digital editing.  After an intensive period of training students will work in groups to create their own short documentaries for Youth View Cambridge - a bi-monthly student produced news program, which airs on Channel 98.  Every other Tuesday the group will work with the high school staff of Youth View Cambridge to produce in studio pieces in a state of the art production facility.
