What: A Workshop for Parents

When: Tuesday, November 16, 2010

Where: The Media Arts Studio, 454 Broadway

Time: 6:30-8:00PM

Cambridge School Volunteers (CSV) continues to recruit, train and support more than 900 volunteers who participate in the Cambridge Public Schools, grades K-12.  Volunteers are college and graduate students, corporate and working professionals, retirees, and adults who want to give back to their community.

At CRLS, CSV provides one-to-one tutors, classroom assistants, college and Science Olympiad advisors, and drop-in math support.

CSV volunteer tutors are available in the CRLS Tutoring Center (3606) in all academic areas for one-to-one tutoring before and after-school. Please encourage interested students to see Rene Meshon after school Tuesday-Thursday in the Tutoring Center to discuss signing up for a CSV tutor.

What is the Science Olympiad?

Science Olympiad is a 25-year-old national competition. CRLS was the Massachusetts State Champion and went to the nationals in 1993, 1994, and 1999. 15 students compete in 20 events that cover all scientific disciplines: Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Engineering. There are three different types of events: Laboratory events, where students have to perform an experiment, gather data and analyze it; Study events, where students take a test on a given topic (e.g. Fossils); Building events, where students have to build a contraption for a specific task.

We are seeking science students to join the CRLS team.  Students meet for at least 1 hour each week for each event that they do (most students do 3 events). Students work closely with Cambridge School Volunteers who are either current Harvard or MIT students studying the material or current/former scientists/engineers/doctors. CSV volunteer advisors serve as a sounding board, troubleshooter or researcher to help guide the students in preparation for the competition. We work with the students to schedule meetings when they have the time. Meetings can be held any time between 2:30-6 M-F. Students that are interested in joining should email Ross Benson (rbenson@cpsd.us) or go to his classroom 2208.
