CRLS FALL SEMESTER Parent/Teacher Conferences:

Dear Parents/Guardians:

On behalf of the faculty and staff of the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School,

I would like to invite you to our 2010 Fall semester Parent-Teacher
conferences which will be held on

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010 from2:30 - 3:30 p.m. and
Thursday, October 21st, 2010 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES WILL BE HELD AT THE MAIN CAMPUS AT

459 BROADWAY. THE 9TH GRADE TEACHERS AND STAFF WILL ALL BE MEETING WITH
PARENTS AT THE MAIN CAMPUS NOT THE FRESHMAN CAMPUS.

These meetings will provide you with an opportunity to discuss your child's performance with

his/her teachers. Enclosed is your child's Progress Report, and it is important that you bring
it with you as copies will not be available at the high school. Students are welcome to
accompany their parents to the conferences. If you are unable to attend either session,
individual teacher conferences may be scheduled by calling your child's Learning Community
(LC) Office during the school day, or preferably, contacting the individual teachers by e-mail.
If you don't have the e-mail address, the Learning Community can provide it.
The telephone numbers are as follows:

LC "C" and 10th grade "L" 349-6674 Freshman / 9th Grade Campus 349-6638

LC "R" and 11th grade "L" 349-6661 LC "S" and 12th grade "L" 349-6652

I know that in some cases the time provided for conferences is not sufficient. We will do

our very best to accommodate all who attend. I urge those of you who have a flexible
schedule and can come on Tuesday, March 16 from 2:30-3:30 PM to do so. Despite our best
efforts, you may not be able to talk to all your child's teachers during the conferences.
Please remember that teachers can be contacted and will arrange meetings at other times.

On the reverse side of this letter, you will find some helpful information regarding

Parent-Teacher Conferences. You may access a Teachers Directory by logging on to your
child's Edline account. If you need assistance with your child's Edline account,
please e-mail: edline-support@cpsd.us. I look forward to seeing you on either the afternoon
of October 19th or on the evening of October 21st 2010. Limited parking will be available after
5:30 p.m. on October 21st, 2010 in Harvard's Felton St. garage across from Broadway Market.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact me or the Deans of your child's
Learning Community.

Sincerely,

Christopher Saheed

Principal

         TIPS FOR CRLS PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES

    • HAVE THE NAME (FIRST AND LAST) OF EACH TEACHER AND THE SUBJECT TAUGHT.

Teacher lists, with names and classrooms, may be picked up in the lobby.

    • CHECK THE ABSENT TEACHER LIST WHEN YOU ARRIVE.

A few teachers will be unavoidably absent.

    • MAPS OF CRLS WILL BE AVAILABLE IN THE MAIN ENTRANCE

Student guides will be posted around the school to help find classrooms.

    • PLEASE BE SURE TO BRING YOUR CHILD'S ENCLOSED PROGRESS REPORT.
    • INDIVIDUAL CONFERENCES WITH TEACHERS AND STAFF WILL BE HELD IN THEIR CLASSROOMS.

Sign up lists with time slots will be placed right outside each classroom door.

    • EACH CONFERENCE SLOT LASTS FOR TEN MINUTES.

Please do not keep teachers longer if others are waiting.

    • SOME CLASSES ATTRACT MORE PARENTS THAN OTHERS.

Do not assume that because there's no line in front of one classroom that the other three will be the

same.
    • IT IS GENERALLY ADVISABLE TO GO AROUND TO ALL CLASSROOMS AND SIGN UP FOR ALL CONFERENCES AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SESSION.

That way if the lists fill up you won't end up being disappointed.

    • IT IS A GOOD IDEA TO BRING YOUR STUDENT WITH YOU.

If that isn't possible, ask him/her to tell you the best way to go from one class to another.

This might help you get around the school more easily.
    • IF YOU NEED TO SPEAK AT LENGTH TO A TEACHER/COUNSELOR; PLEASE FIND ANOTHER TIME TO DO IT.

Fill out a PARENT-TEACHER APPOINTMENT FORM at the Main Entrance for another appointment

 or contact the teacher directly.

Not sure where to go?

Please look for our school ambassadors.  They will be wearing black and white

as well as an ambassador's ribbon.  They are there to answer questions and help direct you.

Author Visits

Our students will have 3 interesting opportunites to hear from,
and speak with, published authors this fall. All within a 2 week period!

October 21st- Mark Kurlansky,
author of the Cambridge READS book this year,
"Cod: A biography of the fish that changed the world"
will be speaking to classes at the auditorium of the Cambridge Public Library. His book tells the fascinating history of
cod fishing in our area, how it influenced the development of our regional economy, and the impact of depleted fish populations.

Mr. Kurlansky's website is: http://www.markkurlansky.com/

October 28th- The 9th graders will all travel up to the CRLS auditorium for a presentation by Laurie Halse Anderson.
Ms. Anderson is a very accomplished author of Young Adult fiction including the very popular "Speak", a New York Time bestseller,
and  made into a movie in 2004. She is equally masterful in contemporary and historical fiction and we are eagerly looking forward to her visit.

Ms. Anderson's website is: http://madwomanintheforest.com/

November 9th- A newly published author from Dartmouth MA, Kimberly Marcus, will be speaking with students about her first novel, "Exposed",
published by Random House. The novel, to be released in February and getting very good pre-pub reviews, tells, in verse, the story of a teen girl
whose life changes after one traumatic incident.  Ms. Marcus, a former child therapist, will speak with students in the beautifully renovated
Pearl K. Wise Library about her writing process and getting published.

Ms. Marcus' website is: http://kimberlymarcus.com/HOME.html
