10 science questions for baseball fans...

If you're a baseball fan, you know a lot about the game: the teams, the players, the rules, the traditions, and the words to "Take Me Out to the Ballgame." But do you know enough about the science of baseball to answer these questions?

How does a knuckleball work?

Does a fastball "rise?"

How does a curveball curve?

How much does muscle strength matter in baseball?

What is sabermetrics?

What do baseball scouts actually do when watching games?

Do steroids help baseball players?

What is pitch f/x? Hit f/x?

What matters to more Theo Epstein: scouting or sabermetrics?

Should players who used steroids be admitted to the Hall of Fame?

If you want to raise your own game this season, Andy Andres and the MIT Science of Baseball program would like to pitch you some science before you take the field-or your seat. If you think that the answer to that last question has nothing to do with science, what you learn might change your mind.

Friday, April 30

6-7:30 PM MIT Campus, Stata Center32 Vassar Street, Room 32-155

Dr. Andy Andres, a diehard Red Sox fan, earned his PhD in Human Nutritional Sciences and Physiology from Tufts University. He is a member of the Faculty at Boston University's College of General Studies in Natural Sciences and Mathematics where he teaches biology and physics. At Tufts University, he teaches one of the first college-level courses ever offered in Sabermetrics. For 17 years, he taught a seminar in exercise physiology and ergogenic aids for athletic performance at Harvard College. In the summer, Andy teaches science and coaches baseball in the MIT Science of Baseball Program.

CRLS Students Learn about Micro Credit
During the past couple of weeks, Ms. Otty's Modern World History students have been learning about foreign aid, sustainable development, and microfinance and are now ready to present their exhibits to you!  Over the last week students broke into six groups to draw up six hypothetical business plans to present for approval to a group of micro lending experts.  All groups focused on Haiti this year and came up with some unique and interesting proposals that all aim to be environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable.
You are invited to come view their work next Thursday, April 15th. Stop by for a few minutes or an hour; we will be stationed in room, R327, from 3-7PM. You are also encouraged to donate some money to a Haitian micro credit organization called Fonkoze.
 PROBLEM OF THE DAY!
In preparation for the math MCAS, which is being given on May 18th and 19th to 10th graders, the DYK will be featuring a Math MCAS Problem of the Day (POD).  Students will discuss the problem in homeroom and come up with a consensus answer. The homeroom with the most correct answers may win a breakfast or pizza  All homerooms (9th - 12th grade) are eligible.  Good luck!
