FYI ...8th Grade Parents...

The AVID program at CRLS is currently recruiting members for the class of 2014.  The goal of AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is to have all students accepted to the four year college of their choice.  The appropriate AVID student has mostly A's and B's, is self motivated and has a strong desire to attend college.

AVID classes meet for one period every other day during the academic year.  Students are encouraged to take honors classes, and college students attend their AVID classes twice a week to offer academic support.  AVID students begin preparing for college acceptance in the ninth grade.  The first two years are devoted to strengthening their academic skills so they can be successful in their high level classes at CRLS and in college.  Junior and senior years are spent on further refining skills and on applying to college.  Students make frequent visits to colleges every year and receive individual guidance throughout the college application process.  This year students have or will visit Colombia, FIT, NYU, Harvard, Northeastern, Colby-Sawyer, UMass, Lesley, Eugene Lang, Bentley, Babson and Emerson.

AVID teachers contact parents regularly to share student progress.  AVID parents are invited to dinners and programs at which they learn what their students are doing in the elective and meet and talk with AVID teachers.  Parents are also actively involved in the college application process.

If you think AVID would be a good opportunity for your 8th grade student, please contact Leslie Davis at ldavis@cpsd.us  or 617-349-6797.  You may also speak with your child's 8th  grade teacher.

CRLS celebrates Pi Day

With Pi Day (3/14) falling on a Sunday this year, the CRLS Math Department celebrated the unofficial holiday on Friday March 12th.  Festivities differed from classroom to classroom and included digit reciting competitions, fun facts about pi, pi songs and movies as well as the eating of pie.  Pi is arguably the most famous number in existence.  It is the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of any circle - large or small.  While pi is irrational (never ends, never repeats), most people round the number to the nearest hundredths and simply call it 3.14.

Creative CambridgeTeens Win National Portfolio Medal:

Two students from CRLS have won Scholastic Art Awards at the National level!  Eric Macomber, an Animation student under teacher Jessie Young, won a Gold Medal.  Molly Shafer-Schweig, a Commercial Design student under teacher Michele Maxwell, won a Silver Medal for her Design Portfolio.  This is a great honor.  To  put it into perspective, 140,000 students from 81 regions around the country compete.  Of those 170, or one tenth of one percent, win gold medals.  Congratulations to these gifted students and their wonderful teachers!

FIRST Robotics Boston Finals

Please come out to support the CRLS FIRST robotics team on Saturday March 27th from 9:00 am -4:30 pm. The event is being held at the BU Agganis arena on 925 Commonwealth Ave. If you get there before 10:00 you should be able to park under the arena. There is a great halftime show at noon. This a great opportunity to watch the robots compete and you can get up close to all the robots if you tour the "pits" where teams work on the robots between matches. Look for team 97.

The Class (French title: Entre le murs), based on a semi-autobiographical novel by François Bégaudeau,  not exactly a documentary, but more a recreation of a literature teacher's experience teaching in a multi-ethnic school in Paris. Bégaudeau stars in the film, and many of the students play themselves, capturing eloquently the reality of teenagers in multicultural France.

After the movie join us for a discussion with French and CRLS students on the education in Paris vs. Cambridge.
