SPRING SEMESTER PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES
March 16, 2:30-3:30 and March 18, 6-8 PM.
All Parent Teacher Conferences will be at the Main Campus, 459 Broadway

*TEACHERS FORM THE 9TH GRADE CAMPUS WILL MEET WITH PARENTS AT THE MAIN CAMPUS

TIPS FOR CRLS PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES

1.     HAVE THE NAME (FIRST AND LAST) OF EACH TEACHER AND THE SUBJECT TAUGHT.
Teacher lists, with names and classrooms, may be picked up in the lobby.

2.      CHECK THE ABSENT TEACHER LIST WHEN YOU ARRIVE.
A few teachers will be unavoidably absent.

3.      MAPS OF CRLS WILL BE AVAILABLE IN THE MAIN ENTRANCE.
Student guides will be posted around the school to help find classrooms.

4.      PLEASE BE SURE TO BRING YOUR CHILD'S PROGRESS REPORT.

5.      CONFERENCES WITH TEACHERS AND STAFF WILL BE HELD IN THEIR CLASSROOMS.
Sign up lists with time slots will be placed right outside each classroom door.

6.      EACH CONFERENCE SLOT LASTS FOR TEN MINUTES.
Please do not keep teachers longer if others are waiting.

7.      SOME CLASSES ATTRACT MORE PARENTS THAN OTHERS.
Do not assume that because there's no line in front of one classroom that the other three will be the    same.
8.     IT IS GENERALLY ADVISABLE TO GO AROUND TO ALL CLASSROOMS AND SIGN UP  OR  ALL CONFERENCES AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SESSION.
That way if the lists fill up you won't end up being disappointed.

9.      IT IS A GOOD IDEA TO BRING YOUR STUDENT WITH YOU.
If that isn't possible, ask him/her to tell you the best way to go from one class to another.  This might help you get around the school more easily.

10.        IF YOU NEED TO SPEAK AT LENGTH TO A TEACHER/COUNSELOR; PLEASE FIND ANOTHER TIME TO DO IT.
Fill out a PARENT-TEACHER APPOINTMENT FORM at the Main Entrance for another    appointment or contact the teacher directly.

Friends of CRLS pilots Travel Fellowships for Students

Educators and parents agree that travel in the company of one's teachers and fellow students can be a life-changing experience.  At the very least, students' cultural curiosity, exposure to other languages, geography and people, are advanced through travel.  This is especially true at CRLS, where over the years our energetic teachers have offered travel experiences for building cultural knowledge and for making connections through service projects of many kinds. Through these ambitious programs our students have traveled recently within the U.S., Europe, the Dominican Republic, and to places as distant as Tanzania, East Africa, Turkey, and Cambodia!
This year, Friends of CRLS has launched a grant program to expand the reach of educational travel, by making such opportunities available to students of merit with a serious interest in travel, who have limited financial resources. The application process requires students to submit an application, letters of recommendation, and to meet financial and academic requirements.
Our first travel fellows, announced in early January, are Doulovely Nazaire and Wendy Astril, both of whom have grown up speaking French, Haitian Creole, and English, and with a strong interest in France and French culture. Their fellowships of $1000 each are making it possible for them to travel to France during the February school vacation with the French Club, with CRLS teachers Margot Murphy and Kate Holmes at the helm.  We look forward to hearing about their experiences, and we thank the many contributors to FOCRLS, along with the support of the school community, who've enabled us to offer this unique opportunity.

Friends of Cambridge Rindge and Latin School (FOCRLS) is a 501(c)3 tax-deductible non-profit public charity founded by two parents in January '07.  The mission of FOCRLS is to raise private funds from within the Cambridge community to support and enrich the academic and social development programs at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, and in so doing,  promote achievement for all students and a greater community investment in the future of Cambridge youth.

CRLS Students return from Cambodia
Marya Wegman and Susie Vanblaricum just returned from a student trip to Cambodia. The trip was a huge success.
Three years ago CRLS students helped fundraise the money to build a school in rural Cambodia. The school opened last February, and part of our trip was to formally open and dedicate the school.  Two teachers and six students brought school supplies to the students at the new Cambridge School and spent some time learning from and teaching the students at our school. Additionally, they toured Phnom Penh and Siem Reap to learn about Cambodia's rich and traumatic history.

Check out the website which has more information about the trip, including a blog and photos: http://cam2cam2010.webs.com/

CRLS Mediation Program in its 4th Year

Did you know that the Cambridge School Department has a Conflict Mediator who works system wide to help people resolve problems.  At CRLS Chandra Banks coordinates a peer mediation program, where trained teens mediate situations involving other teens.

The mediation training is focused on developing listening skills, dealing with angry parties and asking open-ended questions to promote understanding and to create a balanced agreement between the two parties. Mediation is voluntary. What makes mediation so successful is that parties solve their own problems. Not the standard adults lecturing students and telling them what the solution should be. The Mediation Program has been effective in more than 95% of the cases that have been referred.

Chandra Banks also does mediation herself between staff members, staff and parents and students and staff. To learn more about mediation contact Chandra Banks at 617-217-8106 or 617-349-4945 cbanks@cpsd.us
