Edward J. Bloustein School: Nexus of Planning and Public Policy

Rutgers Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers asked their agency Diversity Media and Communication to produce a video for their annual Gala in April.  And once again, Diversity called on Marilyn Petrokubi and Rob Lieberman of TimeSteps Productions, Inc. to execute it.

Marilyn interviewed students, professors,  alumni and the Dean about their experiences at this school which ranks third among graduate and undergraduate Planning Programs in the country.

"Along with a strong theoretical curriculum, the Bloustein School has 18 well-funded Research Centers that give the students real world experience," says Marilyn. "As a result, these students are doing significant work while in school, and, with some certainty, they can step right into meaninful jobs in government and urban planning after they graduate. It's a terrific experience for them."

(This five minute video was finished uncompressed in HD for large screen projection at the Gala  and also compressed for viewing on the web).

From the Library

of Marilyn Petrokubi

In their book ''Blue Ocean Strategy," Renée Mauborgne and W. Chan Kim, professors of strategy and management at INSEAD business school in France, answer the question: "What makes a business profitable?"  They offer business leaders a blueprint for creating uncontested market space and making the competition irrelevant,  offering fresh insights into business strategy that challenge the widely accepted wisdom of competitive advantage and competitive benchmarking.

The authors explain the theory of "Blue Ocean Strategy" and bring the theory to life with entertaining examples. A "Blue Ocean" represents an uncontested market, a product or service that only one company is selling. The authors show that historically this has been the most profitable situation to be in, as opposed to a market with lots of competitors, swimming in waters "bloodied" by excessive competition -  a "Red Ocean."

This book was written to help people find new markets, analyze if the new market could be profitable, and then develops strategies for fully exploiting the new market.  Check it out.

Quote of the Day

"Giving people what they want is fundamentally and disasterously wrong.  The people don't know what they want...  [Give] them something better."
