Virals for the Web

More and more clients are thinking about video for the web, particularly virals that they hope will spread like, well... a virus.

The creative team at TimeSteps boasts that "no germ of an idea is too small" to turn into a huge viral success.

"Corporate, non-profit and agency clients are looking for that unique idea that's got the 'bug'," says TimeSteps Producer, Rob Lieberman. "It's about capturing that special something it takes to become contagious.  Developing true virals as branded entertainment is a creative challenge.  One can really stretch creatively in terms of using music, humor and imaginative concepts in order to arrive at something millions of viewers will want watch. Servicing the brand's needs and adding the novel ideas that we bring to it makes it a lot of fun."

2011 J&J Celebrates 125 Years
Cake, 125th Anniversary
It was 1987 when TimeSteps opened its doors, having landed its first client Johnson & Johnson. The assignment: write, research and help produce the video to celebrate the company's 100th anniversary.

Today 25 years later, TimeSteps' doors are still open and writer/producer Marilyn Petrokubi is still working with J&J - this time commemorating the health care company's 125 year old history for the web.

Marilyn is telling the story of four iconic J&J brands:  Band-Aids, Women's Sanitary Protection, J&J First Aid Kits and Oral Health Products.  "The subject matter here is so rich with media and great stories, it has been a pleasure," says Marilyn. "I had a tour of the J&J Museum  and actually was able to see  products from the turn of the 20th century. It was fascinating. But we don't just dwell in the past, we also address current innovation and plans for the future of the brands as well. I am delighted to have helped them celebrate both major anniversaries."
Researching for Kevin Roche

Doc

"I love the stock footage research part of my job," says Writer/Producer Marilyn Petrokubi.  "Recently I had the opportunity to dig up video scenes for a fellow producer and knock on the doors of some old friends at the same time."

Marilyn was charged with the task of finding footage of  architect, Kevin Roche's iconic buildings of the last 40 years for a documentary about him to accompany a traveling exhibit of his work.  She needed to find interiors and exteriors of General Foods, (Rye Brook, NY)  Union Carbide, (Danbury, CT) Lucent Technologies, (Lisle, IL) Merck (Whitehouse Station, NJ) and John Deere (Moline IL) among others.  But the TimeSteps Stock Footage Archives (scenes from 1896-1960) would not help.  The footage had to be contemporary, shot in the last ten years.

"I contacted the corporate communications departments of the companies, did a full search in the largest commercial footage libraries, and then contacted production companies in the vicinities of these buildings to see if any one had shot there recently.  Many of the people I reached out to were old associates in the business, so it was fun to catch up.  But this was a challenging search because some buildings aren't owned by the companies they were originally built for anymore.  And most production companies don't retain the rights to the footage they've shot, so permissions are hard to come by.  But ultimately, I found some great footage.  There's no doubt Kevin Roche is brilliant, and I've developed a huge appreciation for his work.  Thanks to all of you who helped."
