First of all I cant believe it is already Christmas again...
Well it feels that way for me anyway. I am already moving into what my kids are going to do for summer vacation, where will we be for Thanksgiving, what college they are going to and what senior living facility they will place me in!
All I can say is that time is flying by to fast!
What I would also hope is that time flies by even faster for all our favorite restaurant in town, SATCHEL'S. I am sure you have all heard that there was a fire that started in the kitchen at SATCHEL'S the other night and that they will need to be closed for about 6 weeks. I am sure this affects all of our lives in some way, as they are a mainstay in our weekly menu planning. I have heard from numerous sources that a fund is being started to help pay the salaries of the amazing women and men that cook for us, serve us, clean up for us and make our families happy. If you feel so inclined to help please do,
Liberty Phoenix Lord Owner
P.S. We found a really cool box on facebook labeled "Recommendations from Friends" any chance all you lovely friends want to write a little something something in the box???? Check it out here!

Time to Give Back by indiegainesville
Some of us reside on the east side of town, and were aware of the constant stream of sirens yesterday evening. Sadly, we didn't think much of it. Sure, the sirens were unusual to hear, but accidents happen, and we surmised there was a nasty accident on Waldo Road.
Later in the evening, one of us started to do some work online. "Satchel's is on fire?!" He said incredulously, reading the breaking news from The Independent Florida Alligator. We gawked over his shoulder at the story. All we could think was NoNoNoNoNoNoNoNoNoNoNo.
We grabbed our laptop and went online. Many of you were posting the somber news from whatever local news sources you could find.
But you weren't just posting the stories, the photos, etc. You were sharing your thoughts about what a unique and special place Satchel's is--and how unique and special Mr. Satchel Raye is, too.
It was very moving. On a night of a local election, everyone seemed to band together in support of Satchel's.
Currently, it is estimated that Satchel's will take at least 6 weeks to reopen. It was insured, and we're assuming that insurance will cover the cost of rebuilding and repairs.
HOWEVER--Satchel's employees are without work, and that means without pay. One of the most admirable things about Satchel as an employer was that he pays his employees a livingwage. The following is from a 2009 article about Satchel: click here to see full version
Raye puts money into retirement and health funds for his employees and gives them paid vacation and benefits. He feels it's important to give employees wages they can live on.
So, indiegainesville: let's put our heads together and come up with ways we can help Satchel and the employees over the next few weeks. There have been lots of posts on facebook expressing a desire to give back, help out. We're willing to help organize some fundraising/set up an account for people to donate to.
If someone has already set up an account like this, please let us know!
Who's in? Comment or e-mail us indiegainesville@gmail.com.

Give Up Paper Subscriptions (Go to the Library)Rediscovering your local library will not only help you save paper, but stop paying for books, CDs and other materials.
By Brian Clark Howard
books in a library shelf
Ken Zirkel / istock
Instead of buying small mountains of books, CDs, DVDs, newspapers and magazines that pile up - often unread - check more of them out of your local library, or relax inside the quiet halls and browse in the company of neighbors.
Paper is wasted in incredible amounts; it's one of the biggest materials by volume in landfills. Industrial papermaking has an enormous footprint, from deforestation during harvesting, to the heavy use of water, toxic chemicals and energy during processing... and the burning of fossil fuels during shipping. Paper fibers can only be recycled a few times before they break down, and the process requires energy (albeit much less than paper made from virgin fibers). CDs and other media are made of nonrenewable petroleum products and are very difficult to recycle.
The fact is, many of us are filling our homes with books and other materials that we never, or rarely, use. We would be well advised to save some money, and cut down on waste, by buying only the materials we will really use frequently and patronizing libraries for more of the rest.
Libraries can also be great sources of social interaction and learning. They are typically close to home, encouraging walking, biking or use of public transit. While you're there picking up a book, you may learn about classes, community events or other services. An increasing number of libraries are also moving beyond books to offer for check-out electronic media, such as e-books, as well as computer equipment and even power tools.
