Opt Out of Catalog DeliveriesWith just a couple clicks of a mouse, you can save yourself countless minutes sorting mail, de-clutter your home - and help stop the loss of 100 million trees cut annually to produce junk mail.
At no time do American mailboxes fill up with more catalogs and coupons than around the holidays. Do the planet, and yourself, a favor and get your name off direct mail lists. It's been estimated that we use as much as 100 million trees and 28 billion gallons of water to produce junk mail for just one year. Each American household received an estimated 850 catalogs, credit card solicitations and other junk mail.
You can stop 75% of all junk mail by registering for the Mail Preference Service on the Direct Marketing Association Website. For a fee of $1, they will help remove your name and address from prospective mailing lists. Be patient, as it may take up to 90 days for most mail to stop. But you will be glad you did.
You may also want to check out SlotGuard, which can help stop phone books as well as junk mail.
And, the newest option is the Stop Mail envelope from Catalog Choice. For $6.75, you can stuff junk mail into it, send it to Catalog Choice and the company will communicate to the senders to stop the unwanted mail. |

If you can make it out, this is one of the most beautiful gardens we have ever seen! Talk about a great use of space. This is an installation at "The Midnight" in downtown Gainesville. This is a self sufficient wall garden...imagine if we all had gardens on the side of our house if we didnt have any ground garden space in our yards.

Coppers superfund site...
ALACHUA COUNTY, FL - The United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) is seeking participation from residential property owners in a study of indoor household dust contamination levels in Gainesville.
Residents from neighborhoods near the Cabot-Koppers Superfund site have expressed concerns about potential indoor dust contamination levels. In response, an interagency work group led by the Florida Department of Health developed a testing plan to address these concerns. USEPA has agreed to conduct the study, and the test results will be used to inform the community about concentrations of dioxin and related chemicals in house dust in Gainesville.
Click to view the indoor house dust study plan.
USEPA will require permission from property owners to test indoor house dust samples, which will be collected from 15 homes near the Cabot-Koppers Superfund site and 15 additional homes located in "background" neighborhoods about 2 miles away. Dust sample collections are tentatively scheduled for March/April, 2012.
During the week of January 9, 2012, USEPA will mail out letters to approximately 400 property owners soliciting participation in the study; the 30 tested homes will be selected from properties whose owners responded positively to the solicitation. The solicitation letters will include a brief survey and property access consent forms. The Alachua County Environmental Protection Department (ACEPD) is assisting USEPA in the distribution and processing of the property owner consent forms.
For more information, contact Scott Miller, USEPA Project Manager at 404-562-9120 or Chris Bird, ACEPD Director at 352-264-6801. |
