When it comes to light, what is better than daylight? Good for the soul, good for the mind and still free, light from the sun is the best option for both home and work. With skylights you can have massive heat gain which can be a concern in Florida. With Solatubes, the light tube allows light to enter while keeping heat gain out. Solatube® Brighten Up® Series are the cost-effective way to bring natural light to virtually any room. And now, Solatubes are eligible for 30% tax credit.
Some of the bennies of the Solatube: It provides exceptional lighting. The light output is incredible, providing as much light as you would expect from a skylight many times its size.
It is cost-effective. Tubular Daylighting Devices cost considerably less than other daylighting options, such as windows and skylights, including both product and installation costs.
Installing it is fast, clean and easy. They require no structural reframing, tunneling, drywalling or painting. A professional can install the product in less than two hours and most Do-It-Yourselfers can finish the project in one day.
It can go almost anywhere. The compact and flexible design of TDDs allow them to be installed in just about any room, including rooms without direct roof access and smaller spaces where daylighting would usually not be an option.
It is "Green." TDDs allow you to switch off electric lights during the day, which provides savings on energy bills and also reduces environmental pollution.
It is actually good for you. It has been shown in several prominent studies that increasing daily exposure to natural light can enhance mental and physical well-being, boost concentration and energy levels and a variety of other unexpected perks.

LOCAL BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT.
There's Hope For Local Soap: Moksa Organics
In Gainesville you can find some pretty amazing things you don't find anywhere else like anything gator related, a green building supply store (ha!) and now we can add to the list this conscientious personal hygiene products company, Moska Organics. Founded in 2009 out of their own kitchen, they do not use parabens, sulfates, synthetics, animal byproducts, artificial preservatives, fragrances or even palm oil that is degrading rainforests through palm plantations in East Asia. What's more, all of their packaging is attractive and minimal and uses 100% post consumer waste and as they say "tree-free. Find them online here at www.moksaorganics.com or in Gainesville at Alternatives and Go Gator Green in Haile Plantation Village. |

Blue Jeans Born Again: Bonded Logic Insulation
Ladies, we would never tell you to try and stuff yourself back into those old Jordache Jeans you wore in high school that is, if you still have them around. Even though we're sure you'd look as stunning and trendy in them now as the day you first donned them, there is a better use for them. Try stuffing them behind your walls in the form of R-13 to R-30 Ultra Touch insulation from Bonded Logic. What's remarkable about this recycled blue-jean insulation is like your own jeans, it won't itch and it fits snug as rug for your studs. While neither side is faced with paper, it is just oversized at 16.25" or 24.25" to fit between your wall studs and comes in depths of 3.5"- 5.5" depending on the R-value. Treated with borates, this insulation has no toxic formaldehydes, is resistant to mold and insects and is class A fire retardant. Your installers will appreciate working with it too and you can even get a 3% energy efficiency loan from GRU if you are going to have one of their certified contractors roll it out for you.
So dudes, it's finally time for you to retire your Toughskins from 10th grade and save yourself some money. Click here for more information from GRU on how to get a low-interest energy-efficient loan. |

Do You C.A.R.E.? Recycle That Old Carpet
Dumping that old carpet into the trash can be a tempting end to your carpet removal situation. But consider that as Americans we toss more than 2.5 million tons of carpet into landfills each year. That's enough to fill a space as big as Manhattan annually. In 2002 the Carpet America Recovery Effort (C.A.R.E.) was created on behalf of the carpet industry and key government agencies to divert this carpet waste into new carpet. In North Florida we have two locations in Orlando and Jacksonville to help us with turning that old shag into new rag.
With Carpet there are usually three primary components the soft face, the middle primary backing and the final tertiary backing plus a carpet cushion. The first layer and the middle backing can be recycled while the tertiary layer is most commonly made of latex or PVC. Carpet cushion pad is easily recyclable and is often made of recycled material. When replacing carpet, consider having it left at the curbside if you are in the Gainesville municipality. The city will pick up your `carpet if it is cut into 3' sections and rolled and left at curbside. Also consider other resilient material from INDIGOGreen like Marmoleum or Cork or even recycled carpet options that we have in many different styles.
For more information check out this blog entry from green building advisor or if you are in Alachua county click here for their recycling program. |
