15% OFF ALL SOLATUBES PRODUCTS THROUGH THE END OF JULY!!!

When it comes to light, what is better than daylight?  Good for the soul, good for the mind and still free, light from the sun is the best option for both home and work.  With skylights you can have massive heat gain which can be a concern in Florida.  With Solatubes, the light tube allows light to enter while keeping heat gain out.  Solatube® Brighten Up® Series are the cost-effective way to bring natural light to virtually any room.  And now, Solatubes are eligible for 30% tax credit.

Some of the bennies of the Solatube:
It provides exceptional lighting. The light output is incredible, providing as much light as you would expect from a skylight many times its size.

It is cost-effective. Tubular Daylighting Devices cost considerably less than other daylighting options, such as windows and skylights, including both product and installation costs.

Installing it is fast, clean and easy. They require no structural reframing, tunneling, drywalling or painting. A professional can install the product in less than two hours and most Do-It-Yourselfers can finish the project in one day.

It can go almost anywhere.
The compact and flexible design of TDDs allow them to be installed in just about any room, including rooms without direct roof access and smaller spaces where daylighting would usually not be an option.

It is "Green."
TDDs allow you to switch off electric lights during the day, which provides savings on energy bills and also reduces environmental pollution.

It is actually good for you.
It has been shown in several prominent studies that increasing daily exposure to natural light can enhance mental and physical well-being, boost concentration and energy levels and a variety of other unexpected perks.

The Knowles' Bathroom Remodel

Still in the works, Hal Knowles tells us that he is about 90% complete with his bathroom remodel and has promised to invite us to his "washroom warming" as soon as it's done.  But even as is, it looks great and we couldn't help ourselves and just had to show the world how it was coming along..for inspiration sake!

The Knowles DIY team hired Casting Impressions (before the biz was handed over to Cemented Designs) to design and cast their concrete countertop.  Using the American Clay on their bathroom walls, they decided to seal the clay from about 40" and down to prevent any severe "running" of the clay from direct, heavy, water splashing.  Hal does have one bit of advice on this as they "taped it off to look like a mulit-color wainscoat  [but] be aware for your customers that the sealer absolutely changes the color/look of the clay".

Thanks Hal for the update and the tip...can't wait to see the finished job!

Metlund Hot Water Recirculation Pump Saves Time, Water, AND Money

Did you know that in some homes with long water-line runs the wait for hot water can waste 3-7 gallons?  And since many homeowners don't sit and wait for the hot water while it's on, another 1-3 gallons could be wasted in the process.

Now you can have hot water in 15-30 seconds (depending on the size of the home and water system) without wasting a single drop and by using only a fraction of a penny's worth of electricity.

The Metlund® Hot Water D'MAND® System (a high performance pump, integrated controller and electronic zone valve), requires no special plumbing. It is designed for use with any hot water heating system to provide energy and water savings. It's easy to install in new or existing homes or businesses.

Savings of energy and water, plus extending the life of water heaters, has a significant return on investment. Federal regulations require the use of low flow fixtures (1˝ gallon restrictors on fixtures and 2˝ gallon restrictors on showers). Since eight out of ten homes have long waits for hot water at one or more fixtures, it is easy to see the added convenience and cost savings of instant hot water delivery.

Urban Guerrilla Gardening: The Slow and Quiet Protest

From Treehugger.com...

Guerrilla gardeners in New York have seized the opportunity created by the city's crackdown on illegal advertisements to promote their own cause on the now-empty billboard spaces: greening the urban jungle, one pop-up wall garden at a time.

"The numerous white, empty advertising boards at street level -- many illegal and now empty due to recent enforcement actions by the [City Department of Buildings] -- make perfect pop-up parks; green graffiti if you will," NYC The Blog wrote, explaining the process in four simple steps:

"First, cut out a triangle-shaped area from the plastered paper on the billboard, peel it back, and staple it to the wall. Fill the makeshift pot you just created with soil and plant your fauna and flora. Then step back and admire your handiwork, and be happy with your efforts at creating a pleasing experience for others in the community."

While the "gardens" may not last much longer than the billboards, they're a clever reminder about all the privatized "public" space in our urban areas that could actually be filled with something the public could enjoy.
