When it comes to light, what is better than daylight?  Good for the soul, good for the mind and still free, light from the sun is the best option for both home and work.  With skylights you can have massive heat gain which can be a concern in Florida.  With Solatubes, the light tube allows light to enter while keeping heat gain out.  Solatube® Brighten Up® Series are the cost-effective way to bring natural light to virtually any room.  And now, Solatubes are eligible for 30% tax credit.
choice of diffusers.
Some of the bennies of the Solatube:
It provides exceptional lighting. The light output is incredible, providing as much light as you would expect from a skylight many times its size.
It is cost-effective. Tubular Daylighting Devices cost considerably less than other daylighting options, such as windows and skylights, including both product and installation costs.
Installing it is fast, clean and easy. They require no structural reframing, tunneling, drywalling or painting. A professional can install the product in less than two hours and most Do-It-Yourselfers can finish the project in one day.
It can go almost anywhere. The compact and flexible design of TDDs allow them to be installed in just about any room, including rooms without direct roof access and smaller spaces where daylighting would usually not be an option.
It is "Green." TDDs allow you to switch off electric lights during the day, which provides savings on energy bills and also reduces environmental pollution.
It is actually good for you. It has been shown in several prominent studies that increasing daily exposure to natural light can enhance mental and physical well-being, boost concentration and energy levels and a variety of other unexpected perks.

Local Solar Walk Artist Elizabeth Indianos Uses INDIGOGreen For Inspiration

Elizabeth Indianos is better known in Gainesville as the artist behind the solar walk stretching along 8th Ave.  An interactive art installment that stretches like the ever-expanding imagination within the ever-expanding universe, it used recycled materials in it's construction to make a statement of commitment to sustainable art.  In her most recent work an interactive sundial, she uses recycled material once again and this time with our help.  Honored to help her work be realized, here is a excerpt from her introduction to "True North".

When INDIGOGreen opened its doors in 2007 stating a "commitment to our planet, our community, our families and ourselves to live smarter" I was thrilled and excited.  Through partnership with INDIGOGreen I learned about many non-conventional, highly creative products and concepts that would help me do my part as an artist working to sustain a planet with diminishing resources.

True North- Niceville Sundial is a recent artwork reflecting INDIGOGreen's influence and inspiration. The work is a large scale sundial installed on the campus of Northwest Florida State College, not far from the beaches in the Florida panhandle.  Art features includea sun made from multicolored, recycled glass in concrete and a Little Dipper Bear made from jellybean rocks, a natural stone product---(both products illustrated atINDIGOGreen).  The Sundial requires, insists, that participants use their body standing on the dial establishing "TrueNorth" in order to find their own relative position and time on the planet.

Stealth Water Savings With Toilet From Niagara

Innovative and stylish, Niagara's 0.8 GPF Stealth™ UHET -- ultra high-efficiency toilet -- goes a step beyond the standard water-saving toilets available on the market. With its low-profile body, breakthrough patented hydraulic technology, and the quietest flush on the planet, Stealth™'s unique design has revolutionized the toilet market. By harnessing the energy created by water filling the tank, this toilet uses a patented air transfer system to pressurize the bowl's trapway. Once activated by simply pressing the flush button, the swift, powerful and quiet flush evacuates all waste in the bowl. Offered in both round front and elongated models and adaptable to fit a standard 12" roughing installation, the Stealth™ easily replaces your existing toilet, lowering water usage and utility bills.
Now available at INDIGOGreen, please call for pricing.

Rise Up!  Raising Your Water Savings and Pressure By Raising Your Rain Barrels

The easiest way to generate water pressure is to elevate the rain barrel by using a stand or platform.  Gravity will push the water down and out the attached hose.  The more water there is in the rain barrel, the higher the pressure it will be.

At my house, just elevating the rainbarrel 3 feet gives me enough pressure to use a soaker hose in the garden located about 15 feet away.

A large rain barrel will fill up relatively quickly during a heavy storm or hard rain, especially in a Florida afternoon summer storm (my favorite!).

The overflow emitter and a second rain barrel are important parts of the rain collection system, and can help keep the system from upsetting itself, even during major storms.

Here's a way to calculate how many rain barrels you need to collect water from your roof: Rain falls at a rate of approximately 0.6 gallons per inch of rainfall. A 1,000 square foot roof will collect 600 gallons per inch of rainfall.  That means, you could fill over 10 65 gallon rain barrels from one hard rain.
