Ol' Mike's Bathroom Remodel:  Will He Ever Be Done?

Will Mike ever be done?  Sure he will.  Great things take great amounts of time.  And it's been a great amount of fun.  I got to apply American Clay firsthand and install a "Jellybean" pebble rock tile from Firecaly Tile on the floor and walls.  And of course, all installed around my proud throne, the Dual-Flush from Caroma.  It was not difficult to apply the user-friendly American Clay and all the pebble rocks were easy because they are all 12"X12" sheet-backed pebble-mosaic tiles.  I guess what is equally as satisfying (seriously) as the fact that I have (almost) completed this project all DIY, is that I used non-toxic materials in our everyday bathroom.

Eco Cem: Recycled, Versatile, AND Beautiful

Eco-Cem as the name states, is an eco-friendly cementitious board that is composed of 80% cement and 20% cellulose fibers. It has a simplicity in its identity
that makes any room look extremely sophisticated with a very contemporary feeling.

The applications of Eco-Cem are inumerous, as we list some below:

. Exterior cladding
. Interior cladding
. Steel frame walls
. Flooring
. Bathroom partitions
. Work tops
. Shelving

In addition to being composed of recycled content, Eco-Cem also improves indoor air quality due to one of its great qualities. It is permeable. This property allows Eco-Cem to "breathe" and moisture is able to exit through the material.

Eco-Cem notable features include:
. Incombustible
. Does not rot
. Does not rust
. Humidity resistant
. Impact resistant
. Termite and other vermin resistant

Green Tip.

When It Comes To Green Building Materials, Check The MSDS

A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) must be made available fora building materials.  It's no secret that sometimes they can leave more questions than answers.  However when it comes to paints that claim low VOC content, the Pharos project has been doing some research.  For the major paint brands in particular, a careful side-by-side comparison of these material safety data sheets for these products reveals that not only do eggshell and semi-gloss have higher VOC content , but it is probably at least in part due to the presence of xylene - a volatile organic compound known to be neurotoxic in humans. In contrast, xylene is not listed as a material ingredient in the gloss formula, which has the lower VOC content.  Read the whole report from the Pharos Project here.
