Zero Energy Home Gets National Attention
By definition a net- zero energy home should provide a net energy bill of zero.  Local builder Tommy Williams is touting the fact that they have created the first net-zero energy home in Florida with co-operation with the U.S. Department of Energy, Ken Fonnorow of Florida H.E.R.O., and the Partnership for Advanced Residential Construction.  Although the ribbon cutting ceremony has already happened, tours of this home will continue until February 5th.  This home features a HERS index of 0 (Energy Star Certification is achieved when a home has a HERS index of 77- and national code is 100), a 6.75Kw solar array, a solar hot water system, R-38 attic insulation, and a ducted system in the conditioned space- not the attic.  We encourage you to check it out for yourself (see tour dates below) and ask questions about the other truly sustainable features in such a well-insulated, energy efficient home!  For more information check out the Tommy Williams website or email Todd Louis.

Feb 5th -   Friday from 5:00 pm until 7 pm at Longleaf Village on Archer Road

Local: GRU Puts $500K From Stimulus Towards Efficiency
(Gainesville Sun)  As unusually cold weather gripped the area recently, many homeowners cranked up the heat and now will watch their electric bills rise. This week, Gainesville Regional Utilities announced the expansion of a program that could help eligible low-income homeowners lower their electric usage and bills. Using $528,000 in federal stimulus money, GRU plans to "more than double the number of homeowners we can help" through the utility's Low-income Energy Efficiency Program, GRU spokeswoman Kim Jamerson said.  The utility's Low-income Energy Efficiency Program, known as LEEP, will help 276 homeowners make $800,000 in energy-efficient improvements to their older, out-of-date homes.  Read on...

State: Florida, The First State To Have EPA Impose Runoff Limits

The US EPA on Friday proposed new limits to curb sewage and fertilizer pollution in the state of Florida's waters. "These standards aren't as stringent as we need, but they are a major improvement," said David Guest, attorney for the public interest law firm Earthjustice. "All you have to do is look at the green slime covering lakes, rivers, and shorelines during our warm months to know it is worth the investment to reduce fertilizer runoff, control animal waste better, and improve filtration of sewage." "The most cost-effective way to handle this problem," Guest added, "is to deal with it at its source." While nitrogen-based fertilizer costs well under $5 per pound to spread on land, it costs $235 per pound to remove it once it gets into lakes and streams. And the economic damage caused by toxic algae outbreaks can reach into the hundreds of millions of dollars.  Click here to tell the EPA you support this measure and to not "water" it down.  Or just read on...

State: The Cade Prize For Innovation: $50,000!
The Cade Museum Foundation will sponsor an annual competition - beginning this year - to recognize and promote Florida innovators. The award will consist of a $50,000 cash prize, plus one year of free office space at the GainesvilleTechnology Enterprise Center (GTEC) sponsored by the Gainesville Chamber of Commerce. The competition is open to Florida-based innovators who are taking the first steps towards commercialization. Project summaries should demonstrate that the ideas are innovative, creative, interdisciplinary and commercializable. The long-term goal of the competition is to strengthen and develop the long-standing culture of innovation in Gainesville and Alachua County and to harness the tremendous job-creating potential of the brilliant ideas springing forth from this region every day.  Click here for more information and entry requirements and deadline

Nation: EPA's Chemicals Of Concern In Green Building Products
On December 30, 2009, the US EPA initiated a process that could result in the regulation of health threats from four classes of chemicals that have been widely used in building materials. This action directs new attention to "green" building product standards that do not adequately account for health impacts, and underscores why transparency must be the cornerstone of future product standards and certifications, and the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Rating System. The classes of chemicals listed by EPA as "chemicals of concern," include flame retardants, stain and water repellants, and phthalates (90% of which are used as softeners in flexible vinyl products such as floor and wall coverings). They are largely ignored...Read on

Nation: Should We Drill For Gas In Our National Parks?
As someone who has personally experienced thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail this issue is worth fighting for.  Although not a wilderness trail like the PCT or the Continental Divide Trail, the AT is an experience of both the natural environment and small-town America.  Now the National Park Service has announced plans to end unregulated oil and gas development within the National Park System. For decades, loopholes in drilling rules have allowed more than half of the nearly 700 established wells within the system to operate without oversight by the Park Service.  Read on...

Global: Top 10 Green Building Trends To Look For In 2010
While much of the last decade had all of us focused on shiny new green buildings as the silver bullet for the many environmental challenges in the built environment, the virtual collapse of new development has helped the industry to refocus on the real solution: greening existing buildings.  Read the Top 10 green building trends here...

Spring ACCESS Classes

March  22nd

The public is invited to participate in the annual Alachua County Civic Education SerieS (ACCESS) classes, which will begin this spring. Where do you go if you want to make a difference in your community ... ACCESS is the key." ACCESS begins March 22, and runs for seven sessions. ACCESS is free but space is limited. National Rebuilding Day

Saturday, April 24, 2010

National Rebuilding Day is the culmination of months of planning, evaluating, training, organizing, and mobilizing of volunteers. It is embraced by faith-based groups, civic organizations and corporate sponsors as a way of bringing an immediate impact to our community in a single day. The purpose of that one incredible day is to improve the homes and lives of homeowners in need. Last year, we had five remarkable project sponsors (corporations, groups or individuals who paid for the projects). This April, we need ten sponsors. If you can't be a sponsor, help us get one. Tell your employer - tell your church - tell your club or organization that we will come and explain the mission of Rebuilding Together. Last year, we had over a hundred tireless volunteers. This April, we need two hundred volunteers. Start spreading the word in every way you can think of.  What are you doing on April 24th, 2010? Join us as we make a difference in a day!  For further information, feel free to visit our website, or call us at 352-692-4973.
