Heat-Pump Water Heaters Easy way to save money and energy
(from www.buildinggreen.com)
Interest in heat-pump water heaters is growing, driven in part by new Energy Star standards for water heaters that electric storage models cannot meet, and more stringent U.S. Department of Energy standards for water heaters that are on the horizon. While a number of heat-pump water heaters have come and gone in the past few decades, participation of some of the largest industry players makes the future look brighter this time. At least three heat-pump water heaters have been introduced since mid-2009, including the Air Tap, available at INDIGO for around $775. Local: Incubating Kitchens For All In cooperation with Sustainable Alachua County and the Alachua County Commission, the Alachua County Kitchen Incubator is underway. The idea of the incubator is a space where local foods can be processed and certified thereby reducing stress on the environment, local resources and supporting local growers and producers. Please help the members of this group get a better picture of the demand for local food and local food processing facilities by taking the Local Food Survey. If you are a producer, farmer, or grower of local food, please fill out the Producer Survey as well. Your answers will be a valuable input for the kitchen feasibility study and funding of future local food projects. Fill out the form here.

Nation:White House Recipe for Transforming Stimulus-Funded Weatherization into a National Industry Whatever short-term economic benefits the stimulus package may generate, one of its larger, long-term goals is to make home weatherization a lasting component of the retrofit market. And while we have the Community Weatherization Coalition and the Mike Byerly-led 10,000 homes initiative with the goal to weatherize 10,000 homes in Alachua County, there is a newly released White House sponsored Recovery Through Retrofit Report which is focused on home weatherization becoming a self-sustaining initiative on its own. Saturday, December 12, 10am - 12pm INDIGO 322 SW 4th Ave, Gainesville 378.2285 While we might not understand all of the interplay between streams, rivers, aquifers and oceans, we no know that our oceans are in a very serious state, becoming more so each day. And while the health of the entire planet depends on a healthy ocean, we also know that human habits inland have a harmful affect on the ocean. In North Central Florida, we might think that none of our streams are even directly connected to the sea. However, what we do to our creeks and streams inland does matter to the oceans, just like it matters to our aquifers. The most important thing we can do is to ensure that a plentiful supply of water that is of high quality reaches the ocean. Join Fritzi Olson from Current Problems as she highlights her work on river and stream cleanup in NC Florida and how we can better understand our connections to the water all around us. This workshop is FREE and unlimited in class size but please RSVP to: educationdept@indigogreenstore.com
