Greetings!
The past month has been a busy one and we have exciting news for all....
The date has finally been set for Council to receive the staff report for the Dog Park Pilot Project and it is coming up fast! The Committee of the Whole meeting will take place on Monday, April 4, 2011 at 4:30pm and we need everyone to come out to support the park! 4:30 too early? Certainly understandable, but I'm sure your pooch would appreciate if you could slip out of the workplace just a smidge early, or at least drop by the meeting as soon as you can.
Supporters in numbers make an impact with Council, but how will they know we support the park you ask? Since our puppies cannot attend in body (due to some silly rules), you will bring a picture of your furry friend(s) to wear around your neck on a lanyard or a string so they can support in spirit and be visible to Council.
Why do you need to be there? Remember the petition? The small group of local residents that want the park on Tower Hill Road closed (or relocated as they put it), are rallying friends, family and other people, many who may not even live near the park, to form a larger protest group to be at this meeting. The group is vocal with their displeasure so it is important for supporters of the park to be present in large numbers. Should you want to register to address Council at this meeting, the guidelines and procedures are here.
Pooch Party is coming! The date has been set for Sunday, June 26, 2011 at Richmond Green. We are very excited to bring this event back this year and look forward to fun day filled with fashion, treats and activities with our four legged friends!
Our website has a new look! Please be sure to venture by and let us know what you think. The move to a new provider was definitely challenging and was not without its snags, but the site is now live and we've added some great new features. We have a couple of new blogs that you'll want to keep up with; 'Unleashed' has moved from this newsletter to its own blog... there is simply too much material generated from visits to the park to confine the articles to once a month! Also new is 'The Whole Hound - a Wellness Blog' and, coming soon, 'Fit like Fido'! We have integrated our Forums so they are a little easier to get to, and have added a function that will allow you to upload your own pictures to our gallery for all to enjoy. Now you can also find us on on Twitter and Facebook.
Coming up next month is our Operation Clean Sweep participation with Pitch In week. We'll be tackling the litter around the park and the storm pond as well as at least a portion of the nature trail this year. If you've been to the park recently, you will agree the pick-up is badly needed! This will take place on April 22 and we'll be sure to remind you beforehand!
See you at the park! |

STEWARDSHIP
A New Take on an Old-fashioned Idea
By Adriana Pisano Beaumont
We are all responsible.
You might be asking why I would ever begin an article with such an openly contentious sentiment, but there it is. The recent period of more temperate climate has foreshadowed the horrible job that lies ahead for our small but generous army of volunteers this spring. As the snow melts away, the telltale brown piles begin to appear from beneath their winter blanket revealing the worst-kept secret at the park - that all too many of our park visitors are simply not picking up after their pets leaving the job for others to do. Those 'others' are dog owners, just like you and I, who would much rather spend their days at the park enjoying more time with their pets and focusing their volunteer efforts on other tasks that advance the more constructive mandates of the Klub. Although we all understand that during these colder months, especially while it's actually snowing, people prefer to huddle together for warmth and may inadvertently miss or even, dare I say, purposely ignore their doo-doo duties, it's truly no excuse. We have a philosophy within the Klub that if each individual makes it his or her responsibility to leave the park with a full bag regardless of whose dog it belongs to, this rant would not be necessary and I could just focus on the positive message that follows, that stewardship is a shared and sustainable responsibility from which we all benefit. However, the overwhelming truth is slowly coming to the surface and it's something we have to confront and resolve - together.

You may be saying, at this point: "Well, it's not my fault. I always pick up after my dog. They should deal with the individuals who are responsible". Aye, but there's the rub. The single most important principle we must always bear in mind is that for the sustainable and long-term success of this off-leash area and future ones, we are all responsible. Wow - Heavy concept. Think of us as a community of dog owners who happen to have the off-leash area in common. Each of us belongs to the broader local community of which the off-leash area forms a part as well. We may be parents, educators, gardeners or joggers, and each of those has its own community which is, in turn, connected to the other in some way or another. Is it beginning to sound like a bit of an intricate web? Well, in fact it is just that. Ultimately, by deficit or excess, we are all responsible for ourselves and for each other. What we do (or fail to do) in our small community ultimately has an effect on everyone. The one 'pile' that is left behind has to be cleaned up by someone else. That 'someone else' might have to be you at some point. The one way to avoid deferring the responsibility to another person is to be diligent in picking-up and to point out to someone who may have overlooked their own dog's mess by politely asking them to 'stoop and scoop' so someone else doesn't have to do their work for them. Having said that, we each have to extend ourselves to make up the shortfall and while you're bent over picking up after your dog, you may as well pick up an extra 'pile' for our community. It really doesn't take that much more effort and we all benefit.
So now that we have addressed the upcoming task unwittingly bestowed upon our Klub's corps of volunteers, we should try and make some sense of the idea of Stewardship. What exactly is it? The word 'custodian' or 'caretaker' once meant someone who had responsibility for something or someone. - a keeper, a guardian, a warden, a protector, an overseer. Historically, stewardship was the responsibility given to the person who's job it was to oversee the operation of the house and grounds. It is also reflected in the theological belief that humans are responsible for the world, and therefore are responsible for taking care of it. The ethic of stewardship embodies co-operative planning and management of resources in the interest of long-term sustainability. So, you might be asking, what does this have to do with me as a park user? Well, the only way to achieve long-term success for our off-leash areas is for park users to become park stewards. It's a shift in how we view ourselves. Each and every person who benefits from the off-leash area as a community resource needs to feel a sense of ownership and personal responsibility for its success or failure. Our generous volunteers donate their time to help keep the area clean and safe for everyone but the major onus should always fall on each of us as park stewards to do our fair share.
Some may be wondering about the role the K9 Klub plays in all of this and why they don't take care of the stewardship of the park. I have to ask who people believe 'they' (the Klub) actually are? Besides taking the primary responsibility of leadership for this and future off-leash areas, The Klub per se, serves as a resource to the City in providing informed feedback, recommendations and insights regarding issues impacting us all as park users. They also help to provide education and foster awareness about responsible dog ownership. However, there seems to be this strange perception that the K9 Klub is this intangible entity that lurks behind the scenes 'taking care of business' at the park, quietly making things happen. Actually, the K9 Klub is you and I. We are the Klub. By that I don't just mean members. Some park users have seen fit to join our membership to show support for our mandate as an organization, but anyone who enjoys using the park is reaping a direct benefit from someone else's time, effort or funding. The more people we have sharing the responsibility of stewardship, the lighter the burden on any one individual. That's how sustainable communities work. It's truly that simple. Membership, although not a prerequisite for using the off-leash area, helps us to accomplish our stewardship goals by providing tangible resources such as volunteers and funding. It also gives us strength and presence in our numbers at council meetings when important decisions must be made. We all draw from those resources to sustain the longterm success of the park.
Regardless of whether you have chosen to become a K9 Klub member or just prefer to use the park and be a part of our community, we hope that you take your obligation as a park steward seriously. For the future of the park, we need everyone engaged in shouldering some part of the various responsibilities, no matter how big or small. At the very least, please clean up after your dog and let others know if they have failed to do so. If you wish to be more involved, consider becoming an official Klub volunteer in some capacity. Volunteers do not need to be members (although we encourage it) and the act of giving your time or skills to our community is guaranteed to bring fulfillment and personal growth in the knowledge that your effort has made a difference to all of us at the park.

Park Volunteer News
We are postponing our regular clean sweep day in March in anticipation of the BIG cleanup as a part of Richmond Hill's Operation Clean Sweep on Friday, April 22nd. Further announcement on this event soon.
Special thanks to our volunteers who have, over the last several weeks, taken the time to clean up the park during the spring melt.
The scheduled "10 minute clean sweep" day on the last Sunday of every month is the standing meeting date for park volunteers to meet briefly to catch up on park happenings, maintenance issues, discussions on further improvements etc. We will also use this time for orientation, handing out information and badges to new volunteers.
The next meeting of the park volunteers is at 11am on Sunday, May 29th at the front entrance. If you have are interested in joining our team of park volunteers, come on down!
Also, if any students require volunteer hours, come help us out at the clean sweep; keep an eye on the event calendar for future dates and times. |

We always have information to share so keep an eye out for future newsletters and notices. Thank you for your support.
