Greetings! Once again we are off to a barking new year!
It was just over a year ago we saw the first media coverage in the Richmond Hill Liberal of some local residents not happy with the new dog park. It was just the start of a year of articles and letters in the news both pro and con; so much so that park made the Liberal's list of top news stories of 2010! We like to think that any news coverage that keeps the park and its fate forefront in the minds of Richmond Hill residents is a good thing. Here we are a year after that first article still unsure of the fate of the pilot project. We are waiting patiently for an announcement from the Town as to a date for the final report to Town Council. Stay tuned as we expect to hear some more detail soon. In the meantime we continue to enjoy the wonderful, albeit cold, park with our 4 legged companions and plan our participation in upcoming events. The 43rd Richmond Hill Winter Carnival is nearly here! The festivities begin the evening of February 4th at Mill Pond with some Hockey and the Amateur Band contest and continues throughout the weekend with a ton of activities. The K9 Klub has volunteered to operate the BBQ's and serve food from 11am - 2pm on Saturday, February 5th. We could use some more help! Email dwalker@rhk9klub.ca if you would like to join us! Also on the agenda this Spring is the Richmond Hill K9 Klubs 2nd Annual General Meeting. This meeting of our membership will take place again this year in the main room of the McConaghy Centre on Tuesday, April 19th. Along with guest speakers, prizes and refreshments, we will be looking to elect new members to our board of directors. If you are a paid member interested in volunteering on a more substantial basis, please express your interest to Co-Chair, Dave Walker dwalker@rhk9klub.ca. We will provide information on the responsibilities and time commitments required. Currently there are 2 positions available. We have lots more exciting things planned for our members in 2011 including more value for your paid memberships and an absolute bash at the pooch party we are working on for the early summer - stay tuned! |

"Anticipation"
About twice a year, I am fortunate enough to get to go to my all time favourite restaurant, an upscale oyster bar located in downtown Toronto. The anticipation that I feel before I get in the car, as I am driving down the D.V.P. practically drooling, and then finally enjoying an assortment of decadent oysters must be similar to the anticipation that Oscar and Zen experience every time I take them to the Off Leash Dog Park (OLDP).
All I have to do to indicate that a visit to the OLDP is about to happen is open the cupboard door and grab some plastic bags. Oscar and Zen then come running to the door spinning in circles and shaking with anticipation (my husband says I do the same thing). I somehow manage to put on their leashes, grab my jacket and boots and get them in the car. The ride up Yonge Street is a complete bark, whimper and drool fest. When we pull into the parking lot, they are literally ready to burst out of the car; it takes all the strength I have to hold them back from running across the street directly to the park. As we enter the gated area, I remove their leashes as quickly as I can, open the gate and off they go into their urban oasis. I then stand in delight watching them enjoying their much anticipated and needed freedom. Slowly their energy begins to subside and it's time for them to begin their contented journey home, so I round them up put back on their leashes and head to the car. The drive home is much more relaxing; Oscar and Zen are now calm, quiet and very thirsty, just as I am when I am on my way home from eating a dozen or so salty oysters.
Luckily for them they will most likely get to visit the OLDP the next day, and without fail the minute I open that cupboard door and reach for a plastic bag, their anticipation will mount once again. Fortunately for me Oscar and Zen are thrilled with simple pleasures; my husband, however, isn't so lucky.

Park Volunteer News
The scheduled "10 minute clean sweep" day on the last Sunday of every month is the standing meeting date for park volunteers to meet briefly to catch up on park happenings, maintenance issues, discussions on further improvements etc. We will also use this time for orientation, handing out information and badges to new volunteers. The next meeting of the park volunteers is at 11am on Sunday, January 30th at the front entrance. If you have are interested in joining our team of park volunteers, come on down! Also, if any students require volunteer hours, come help us out at the clean sweep; keep an eye on the event calendar for future dates and times. |

K9 Klub To-Do List
In no particular order, these are some of the suggestions from our members:
- POOCH PARTY! at Richmond Green (Early Summer 2011 - send us your feedback)
- PARK #2 !!!
- Sun Shelter
- Tool bunker/shed
- Additional Trees/shrubs
- Additional park benches
We encourage you to email us your ideas and order of priority. We will compile a list and perhaps email out a survey to help prioritize your ideas. We can't do it all at once and projects will require additional fundraising.
