Richmond Hill K9 Klub
RHK9Klub Newsletter
It's All About the Dogs!September 2010
Greetings!

So, when we first started writing a monthly newsletter we were a little concerned that monthly was too often.  How would we ever have enough interesting news to share month over month? The park, and our quest to establish and keep it, never fails to surprise, amuse, frustrate and delight us and always provides content.
This month is no different and for this edition, our 12th,  we have lots to share and update... where to start?
Website:  If anyone happened to notice, we were down or at least limping, for a day or two on a couple of occasions in the last month and have had an odd pop-up issue on some pages.  The reasons for these problems are unknown (Hackers?  Disgruntled non-dog people? Who knows...) but we think we have this all resolved. The site is professionally hosted and fully backed up twice a week and we're getting faster at restoring! We still have some concerns on load speed and we'll continue to work on that.  Please email us if you notice any issues though, as we may not catch them all.
It's municipal election time!  (The Silly Season)
On Thursday, September 16th we emailed all of the Richmond Hill Mayoral, Regional and Local Council incumbents and candidates three questions. If you haven't seen it in our news blog, the letter can be found here:  Candidate Questions
In the overall scheme of things, our park is a small issue in Richmond Hill and if you are follower and supporter of local politics, vote as you would anytime, however if you are one of most of us who rarely vote in Municipal elections, please take the time to choose a candidate in your area that is most likely to support our park and get out to VOTE.
We will be posting the report with results in the next week or so on our website and we will email a special note to our newsletter subscribers.  We will also share with the media in case they feel this could be newsworthy.  As of right now we have received a response from all incumbents and all but 6 candidates from various Wards.

On that note, we have been told that the final decision on the park will be made by the NEW elected Council and that the Parks Department will be presenting their report on the pilot project at the first Committee of the Whole meeting tentatively scheduled November 15th at 4:30pm, Council chambers.  We'll keep you posted.

The board: After almost two years of serving on the board, one of our directors, Sid Fischburg, resigned this month for personal reasons.  Sid handled our media relations, press releases and actively volunteered time at our events and attended important Town meetings.  At our board meetings, Sid kept (or at least tried to keep) the group grounded and focused on our missions.  Hopefully we don't stray too far off course now that he is gone.  On behalf of our membership, our sincere - Thank You Sid!
You may recall from the last newsletter, a link to a response to "the petition" penned by Adriana Pisano Beaumont.    Adriana is an avid supporter, K9 Klub member and park user.  She is well known around Richmond Hill and with many of the folks at the Town offices, especially in the Parks, Recreation and Culture Department with whom she has volunteered over the years.  Adriana was an active dog park advocate, even before we came about as a group, and is a very articulate and vocal friend of the environment.   The K9 Klub board asked Adriana if she would join our board as a director and she accepted!   Adriana's latest prose can be found posted in the park bulletin board, a copy of which in the next article.

We are pleased to announce the addition of two new commercial sponsors!

The Town Still Needs Feedback!(more than ever)

To keep the park open after the trial period we need overwhelming community support.  Most people only take the time to email or send letters when they have a complaint or an issue, however positive feedback on the park is important for the Town to receive.  Please take a moment and send Patrick Lui, Parks Planner, your supporting words and experiences:

Tree-Plant-Shrub Donation Drive
Tree Planting!

Pee Tree

The drive didn't turn out exactly as planned as we received a surprise commercial donor.  Therefore we will be moving forward with some changes.

The event is now a tree planting,  Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions and support.

The project has been approved by the Parks department, in principle, provided we adhere to the tree species guide posted on the town's website. What?  No Palm trees??

The Parks department has provided us with detailed drawings of the park so we can show our preferred locations and seek their final approval. Tree Valley has generously informed us they will donate a number of mature trees from the approved list.

If you are interested planting or helping in any way, please email wwalker@rhk9klub.ca

How to be an Off-Leash Area "Watch Dog"

Given the current sentiment of opposition expressed by a few residents in the area, there have been concerns by dog owners in our community relating to the safety of our pets at our off-leash area.  It is important to be aware of the reality that introducing off-leash areas to communities has historically been a contentious issue.  What we need to understand is that there will continue to be opposition to their presence and among the opponents, there could potentially be an individual or several who feel compelled to commit criminal acts of vandalism, mischief or direct harm to our four-legged friends.  In the face of this, it is important that we, as dog owners, create a culture of education without panic.  We all need to be aware of what to look out for and how to deal with situations that could threaten to harm our dogs, park property or the safety people who come to enjoy the opportunity for active recreation.

Firstly, it is very important to be informed about the park rules and by-laws. They have been instituted for the protection of yourself, your dog and park property and use of the park is contingent upon adhering to them.  If you are unfamiliar with the rules which ALL park users are expected to adhere to, please view them on our RHK9Klub Website at:  Park Rules.  For those of us worried about possible contamination by toxic substances or anything intended to cause harm to our dogs or potentially our children, here are a few rules and tips that relate to that concern:

Bring your own water for your dog and be sure to take it with you when you leave.  Bowls or water bottles left behind will be removed by Klub volunteers for safety (recall tainted water incidents at High Park in 2008 that claimed the lives of several dogs and raccoons).

Dogs in the off leash area must be within visible range of their owner at all times. Our park is unique because of the natural topography, which is one of the great things about it, but also poses a challenge to keeping an eye on your pets as they roam around the hills, valleys and shrubbery.  Move around the off-leash area as your dog does.  If you are paying attention to your dog while in the park, you may be able to spot a problem early.  If you notice your dog returning to a patch of mulch or ground and digging up or eating something, investigate immediately.  Remove anything that could potentially cause harm and report the incident to a Klub volunteer.   If you suspect that your dog has ingested a harmful substance, take the necessary precautions by making a visit to your local veterinarian and if confirmed, report the incident to York Regional Police (Recent changes to the Criminal Code have made it an indictable offence to poison a pet or to leave poison somewhere a pet could easily ingest it).

Glass containers and other breakable materials capable of causing injury to a dog are not permitted within the off leash area.  We must have a zero-tolerance policy for breakables.  If we notice bottles or other breakables on the ground, we should know to remove them and place them in the trash by the exit.  This vigilance keeps everyone safe, regardless if the cause was negligence or a deliberate intent to cause harm.

Finally, we should all be diligent in picking up non-intentional hazards that make their way into the park and that can be as lethal to our pets as poison or broken glass.  Plastic bags, bottle caps and cigarette butts can become lodged in a dogs windpipe or ingested and cause harm.  We wouldn't want these items littering our backyards, so let's keep them out of our off-leash area!

The key time of day to be especially vigilant is when visiting the park first thing in the morning since mischief would most likely occur overnight.  We should have a thorough look around and take note of anything that seems out of place or suspicious.  If you notice anything unusual, notify a Klub Volunteer.

Above all, it is important to create a dialogue aimed at education rather than panic.  Take the time to discuss what you know about the rules with anyone who appears to be lacking that information.  Don't be confrontational.  Many people just aren't aware of the rules.  It may just be that we need to remind each other occasionally about how we all need to work at keeping the off-leash area safe for everyone, two legs or four.  We all need to be "Watch Dogs".
