Greetings!
First of all, welcome to all of our new friends that signed up for the newsletter in the last month. I encourage you to go to the newsletter archive on our website to catch up on what you've missed over the last year or so.
We were holding up the August newsletter just in case we received any last minute updates on the petition to relay, but there is nothing new for now.
It has been suggested that a petition be started in favour of the park, however the Klub decided our only official action with respect to the petition for the time being was to address Town Council the day the petition was officially received and to make sure we published its contents on our website and in the notice board at the park.
The idea was to let our community respond in its own way for now and then the Klub would coordinate an overt stand when the time was right.
And what a response! The Town has received lots of feedback from concerned park users. Thank you all for taking the time to share your feelings with the Parks Department, your local Councillors and the Mayor.
One response REALLY stood out! It was written by Adriana Beaumont with much care and passion. If you have not had a chance to read this petition rebuttal, make sure you check it out HERE.
Please keep the letters coming to the Parks Dept: plui@richmondhill.ca ! There is no such thing as too many emails and, if you are so inclined, the Klub would loved to be copied: info@rhk9klub.ca. Please remember to express your feelings of, not only the closure of the Leash Free area, but more specifically the closure of this location.
The K9 Klub Board is meeting Tuesday August 31 to plan a couple of important events we'd like to hold to further support our park.
- The first event/activity should be held in September. It's currently outlined as a tree/shrub donation & planting initiative to further enhance the parks look, especially the small dog area.
- The 2nd event is to celebrate the one year anniversary of the park opening. This would be held in the parking lot on Tower Hill road likely Sunday, October 24th, 2010. If you are interested in helping us at these events, please email our events director, Colette: ctanel@rhk9klub.ca
As usual, stay tuned to the news blog on the website and participate in the forums.
See you at the park!

The Town Still Needs Feedback!(more than ever)
To keep the park open after the trial period we need overwhelming community support. Most people only take the time to email or send letters when they have a complaint or an issue, however positive feedback on the park is important for the Town to receive. Please take a moment and send Patrick Lui, Parks Planner, your supporting words and experiences:

Tree-Plant-Shrub Donation Drive!
Prompted to the idea by the act of kindness of one of the park users, King Shepherd Ramsey's dad, planting the tree in the small dog area, we would like to rally everyone to see if we can do more of the same!
Although still in the planning stage, we're shouting out to anyone who can obtain and donate trees, hearty plants and shrubs for planting at the park. Please note all plant material must be labelled with it's species so it can be researched for toxicity, etc.
Some ideas:
- Cull from your home gardens any hearty perennials you no longer want or are taking up too much space.
- Purchase shrubs and trees from our local nurseries and Garden Centers that often have end of season sales at this time of year.
- If you know or use a gardening service, ask them if they have any extra plants they could donate.
We'd love your assistance to see how many trees, plants and shrubs we can gather from around Richmond Hill. Although we have not worked out the logistics, the idea is we'll pick a morning on a Saturday or Sunday in September, gather the donations in the park and have a planting party.
If you are interested in donating, planting or helping in any way, please email wwalker@rhk9klub.ca |

Message of warning from Co-Chair Neal Nicholls
Maxx was playing with an orange/ street hockey ball the other day, with my grandson in our back yard. He came running in yelling that Maxx had a ball stuck in his throat and was choking.
I ran out and started massaging his throat, I could feel the ball, luckily it had not gotten into his wind pipe. I tried to pry his jaws open but he wouldn't let me, on the third attempt he ran off a couple of his body lengths and gagged, the ball came flying out and he was OK.
Lesson, do not let your dog play with this type of a ball, it is a rubber /vinyl composition and they are smooth and when wet quite slippery, unlike a tennis ball that is covered with a fur like material and is not slippery.
We were very lucky.
Obviously that ball is no longer in existence.

Stouffville Dog Owners Association
Keep an eye on our sister club in Stouffville! They just received approval for their leash free park pilot project! They are anticipating an official opening later in September. The club is also working on a website; they will share the web address with us when it goes live.
We took a sneak peek at the site (pictured) Its location is being kept quiet for now while the Town of Stouffville finishes the work. Some creative Googling however will lead you there.
Go Stouffville!.

Park Volunteer News
We are very pleased to announce a couple new park volunteers to our crew! Please watch for Phil Quakenbush and Barb Schultz making their rounds!
The park continues to look well cared for and park reports are being received regularly. Thank you!
The scheduled "10 minute clean sweep" day on the last Sunday of every month is the standing meeting date for park volunteers to meet briefly to catch up on park happenings, maintenance issues, discussions on further improvements etc. We will also use this time for orientation, handing out information and badges to new volunteers. The next meeting of the park volunteers is at 11am on Sunday, August 29th at the front entrance. If you have are interested in joining our team of park volunteers, come on down!
Also, if any students require volunteer hours, come help us out at the clean sweep; keep an eye on the event calendar for future dates and times. |

K9 Klub To-Do List
In no particular order, these are some of the suggestions from our members: - POOCH PARTY! at Richmond Green (Late spring 2011 - send us your feedback)
- Sun Shelter
- Tool bunker/shed
- Additional Trees/shrubs
- Additional park benches
We encourage you to email us your ideas and order of priority. We will compile a list and perhaps email out a survey to help prioritize your ideas. We can't do it all at once and projects will require additional fundraising. |
