It's All About the Dogs!July 2010
Greetings!

Just when we thought it was safe to go back into the water.......

A petition was filed to close the Richmond Hill dog park!

Some common responses received thus far:

Why????
Are you kidding me!
For the love...!
Who filed this?
How can I help?
This is one of the best dog parks in the GTA!

A copy of the petition's cover letter outlining the group's complaints is available from our home page and on the notice board at the park.

The Richmond Hill K9 Klub board has decided to leave this news to fester in the community for the time being and ask that our members and supporters express their opinions via email to the parks department (plui@richmondhill.ca) with a copy to the Klub. The parks department is compiling all of this feedback in preparation for the final report to Town Council at the end of the pilot project.  It would be nice if Patrick's 'Yes' folder was thicker than his 'No' folder.

Keep in mind that our town council is officially on summer break until early September and between now and election day their focus will be on larger issues.  We do not want this to be an election issue as this park, although important to our community, should rank low in our election decision making.  It couldn't hurt however to know your incumbant or candidate's position on this and other local matters that are important to you.  Don't be afraid to drop them an email.

In the fall, or when the appropriate opportunity presents itself, we will send out a "Call to Action"" to everyone to "Release the Hounds!"  Stay tuned to our News Blog and Forum area of the website.

The K9 Klub is participating in another important community event this summer and that is David Cohen's 4th Annual Community BBQ for the Heart & Stroke Foundation (first burger or hot dog is free! How ironic is that? No worries, they have veggie burgers too) to be held Thursday, July 21, 2010 5:30pm at Richmond Green.  Drop in and say hi! Sorry for short notice!

OK - back to turning lemons into Lemonade... ;)

See you at the park!

The Town Still Needs Feedback!(more than ever)

To keep the park open after the trial period we need overwhelming community support.  Most people only take the time to email or send letters when they have a complaint or an issue, however positive feedback on the park is important for the Town to receive.  Please take a moment and send Patrick Lui, Parks Planner, your supporting words and experiences:

Must Cool Offz

Welcome new subscribers and thanks to all!

In the last month the Richmond Hill K9 Klub has received an influx of new subscribers to this newsletter; welcome aboard!

Thank you also to those that have taken the next step to become members via mail or PayPal!  It is our members that will influence the direction of this club and ensure its longevity! It is also our membership that will speak volumes to Town Council as support for the continuation of the Tower Hill Leash Free area.

A huge thanks goes out to those who have donated either through Paypal or at our events throughout the summer.  Without you we would not be able to do what we do as effectively.

We normally use this space to provide interesting articles and advice. This month, we are shouting out to our community for assistance.   We would love your help in providing us with content that you feel would be of value to Richmond Hill dog lovers.  Our readership is a diverse cross section of Richmond Hill (and area) dog owners.  If you have a knack for writing, have valuable dog knowledge to share, or have fun and interesting stories, we'd love to include them in future issues.  Just drop an email to info@rhk9klub.ca with your idea or submission.

Some website tips our older subscribers will already be familiar with and visit regularly:

  • Newsletter Archive: We have published a monthly newsletter since November 2009 and they are all available in the archive link in the left column of our web pages.
  • News Blog:  Postings are done at least once a week - stay tuned
  • Polling Station:  make sure you have voted and email us if you have an idea for a new poll.
  • Public Forum:  This hasnt reached it's potential as a communication tool yet, but is becoming more active - play nice!
  • Photo Gallery: Highly recommended.  Make sure you use "piclens" to view the albums. If you 'right click' once loaded, you can choose full screen.  We often leave it on like a screen saver!  If you have some pictures from the park that we can add, email them to wwalker@rhk9klub.ca

Park Volunteer News Park Volunteer pouch

The park volunteers haven't had a chance to meet as a group in quite a while and several more members have expressed interest in joining the team. For this reason, we have decided to use the scheduled "10 minute clean sweep" day on the last Sunday of every month as a standing meeting date for park volunteers to meet briefly to catch up on park happenings, maintenance issues, discussions on further improvements etc.  We will also use this time for orientation, handing out information and badges to new volunteers.

This means next meeting of the park volunteers is at 11am on Sunday, July 25th at the front entrance. If you have are interested in joining our team of park volunteers, come on down!

Also, if any students require volunteer hours, come help us out at the clean sweep; keep an eye on the event calender for future dates and times.

K9 Klub To-Do List

Now that we have the park Bulletin board successfully under our belt, it is time to look at the other items on our list to tackle:

In no particular order, these are some of the suggestions from our members:

  • POOCH PARTY! at Richmond Green (Late spring 2011 - send us your feedback)
  • Sun Shelter
  • Tool bunker/shed
  • Additional Trees/shrubs
  • Additional park benches

We encourage you to email us your ideas and order of priority.  We will compile a list and perhaps email out a survey to help prioritize your ideas.  We can't do it all at once and projects will require additional fundraising.
To Our Corporate Sponsors:Thanks!

On behalf of the Richmond Hill K9 Klub and our loyal friends we wish to thank you for your generous donations and ongoing support.

Children and dogs are as necessary to the welfare of the country as Wall Street and the railroads.

A dog is the only thing on this earth that loves you more than he loves himself.

A dog is like an eternal Peter Pan, a child who never grows old and who therefore is always available to love and be loved.

Dogs are our link to paradise. They don't know evil or jealousy or discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring -- it was peace.
~ Milan Kundera

I've seen a look in dogs' eyes, a quickly vanishing look of amazed contempt, and I am convinced that basically dogs think humans are nuts.
~ John Steinbeck

I think dogs are the most amazing creatures; they give unconditional love. For me they are the role model for being alive.
~ Gilda Radner

A person who has never owned a dog has missed a wonderful part of life.
