It's All About the Dogs! March 2010
Greetings!

Well, it appears that winter has been kind to our park; even the surprise "water feature" has drained and dried nicely.  The water dogs may be a little disappointed, but we humans might actually be able to clean the inside of our cars and put away the extra towels now, or at least until the "spring showers" begin. The thaw did reveal a few small problems; the gate for the small dog area was out of whack for a few days and a stretch of fence along the North side of the large dog area sunk about 6 inches and popped the caps on a few posts.  Town workers were onsite assessing and doing repairs the morning following our report to the Parks Department!  Thanks so much to the Parks, Recreation and Culture Department for being so efficient! Some "leftovers" and stray rubbish also made an appearance with the meltdown; with the help of park patrons, our volunteers will work on the clean up.  A thorough Spring clean will take place on April 24th & 25th during Pitch In week...  mark your calendars; we'll need as much help as we can get!

As most of you are aware, the  Annual General Meeting (AGM) has been called for April 13, 2010, 8:00pm at the M.L. McConaghy Centre.  We have Klub business to take care of, including filling available seats on the Board. Recently Phil Cyr (Co-Chair) and Christina Cyr (Secretary) received wonderful news; they will soon welcome an addition to their family! They are currently busy making preparations for the arrival of their 1st foster child who will certainly demand 100% of their time and attention. For this reason the happy couple has submitted their resignations and we have accepted. Phil and Christina have been in this from the beginning and their contributions have been immense. The Klub has some very large paws to replace!

Please submit your Director nominations to dwalker@rhk9klub.ca.   Remember - to be able to vote at the AGM, you must be a paid member of the Richmond Hill K9 Klub.  Our annual fee is nominal, but paid participation shows the Town of Richmond Hill that our members are serious and committed to ensuring the leash free park is officially approved at the review in early 2011. Please visit our membership page and show your support.

The AGM will have some discussion about the Off leash dog park, its daily function, planned amenities and its future beyond the 1 year pilot period. We have also scheduled some guest speakers and a 4 legged special guest who should delight us all! Lynn Foster, Councillor Ward 4 and Greg Beros, Councillor Ward 1 have confirmed their attendance.  A detailed agenda will be sent and available on our website 2 weeks prior to the meeting.

We cannot stress enough the importance of a large showing at this event in support of the park.  Please be sure to pass the word to your fellow dog owners; forward them this newsletter, direct them to our website or have them grab a flyer from the new box at the park.

The Town Needs Feedback!

To keep the park open after the trial period we need overwhelming community support.  Most people only take the time to email or send letters when they have a complaint or an issue, however positive feedback on the park is important for the Town to receive.  Please take a moment and send Patrick Lui, Parks Planner, your supporting words and experiences:

DISPELLING THE MYTH, "YOU CAN'T TEACH AN OLD DOG NEW TRICKS"
 by MAXX NICHOLLS

For several years I have walked down to the end of my driveway in the morning, around six thirty to pick up my newspaper.

Maxx [391] our Golden, always standing in our doorway, excitedly waiting on me to give him the paper and say, "In the house, Maxx", he would then take it and run into the kitchen, drop it, and wait to receive his cookie reward for bringing the paper, "In the house".

One morning, last spring, it was raining and I dutifully, went down to the end of my driveway to get the paper, coming back toward the house, with Maxx as always, waiting excitedly for the paper, it suddenly dawned on me that something was wrong with this picture.

The fact was that, Maxx had ME trained so HE could take it, "In the house" and receive his reward and praise.

"That picture" Was reversed within three weeks, albeit he has since added his own little quirks to, "In the house" with the paper.

When he finishes his breakfast I will say to him, "Where is the paper, lets get the paper".

By now he is heading for the front door, all excited to get "THAT" paper.

He runs down the steps on to the grass, or snow, stops washes his face on the grass or snow and some times rolls him self around, then picks him self up, visits the community utility pole on the boulevard, and leaves his signature.

He then stops and looks at the paper, he slowly starts to wag his tail and then makes a mad dash for the paper, picking it up, maybe shaking it and throwing it up in the air, then bouncing along and "Into the house", where he receives his treat for:

K9 Klub To-Do List

What would this section be without an update on our bulletin board?  We have, once again, gone back to the drawing board. The original was simply beyond our means and did not actually provide the functionality we needed. The design we are looking at now is back to basics and should provide much more bang for the buck. Of course, bucks are always a problem and we may have to ask our members for a little help in the way of donations.

What are we going to do for our dogs in 2010?

The K9 Klub board is considering what our major accomplishment(s) will be for 2010.  We will be asking our membership for ideas at the Annual General Meeting as well as through the website forums and coming newsletters.  Please submit some ideas to the forum and or via email.

Kudos to all of our park volunteers for persevering through the spring thaw and the surprises uncovered!  The park is immaculate!

Special thanks for the work done recruiting additional volunteers to help as well.

We are always looking for volunteers to help ensure the leash free area pilot project is a success.

If interested, please email us at volunteer@rhk9klub.ca and we'll send you out full details.  Park Volunteers are given a badge/wallet to wear around their neck so they are easily identified.
